| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Dylan Axelrod (P) CHI-A |
5/23/2013 |
| It looks like Axelrod will preserve his job in the White Sox's rotation over Hector Santiago, the Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports. |
Axelrod and Santiago were both on the bubble as John Danks (shoulder) prepared for a return to the rotation. Initially, it looked like Axelrod would be headed to the bullpen, but now Santiago looks like the likely candidate. Of the five remaining in the White Sox's rotation, Axelrod will enjoy the least job security. |
|
Alex Rios (OF) CHI-A |
5/23/2013 |
| Rios extended his AL-leading hit streak to 17 games with a 1-for-3 performance against the Red Sox on Wednesday. |
Rios has been one of the beacons of light this season in an otherwise-dark White Sox lineup. He has hit .353/.371/.647 over the course of the streak with two home runs and two stolen bases. |
|
Hector Santiago (P) CHI-A |
5/23/2013 |
| Santiago will likely return to the bullpen with John Danks (shoulder) coming off the disabled list Friday, the Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports. |
Originally, it looked like Dylan Axelrod would take the walk to the bullpen when Danks returned. However, Santiago has had a few more clunkers of starts, and the bullpen is short on left-handed arms. Santiago may still produce K's from the bullpen, and he will likely be the first arm back in the rotation should injury befall one of the starting five. On that note, Santiago owners may be wise to hold off on a decision until Chris Sale (shoulder) is officially cleared for his next start. |
|
Hector Santiago (P) CHI-A |
5/22/2013 |
| Santiago (1-3) was called upon to pitch Wednesday against the Red Sox on short rest in place of injured starter Chris Sale (shoulder). He gave up two runs on four hits while walking four and striking out a season-high nine over six innings. |
Santiago pitched fairly well considering he was going on just three days of rest. The deep counts and walks forced him to expend 107 pitches over just six innings. Santiago will likely return to the bullpen after the White Sox announced that Sale will make his next start and that John Danks (shoulder) will be activated from the disabled list. |
|
John Danks (P) CHI-A |
5/22/2013 |
| Robin Ventura officially announced that Danks would start Friday against the Marlins, ESPN Chicago reports. |
With his activation from the DL, Danks will set foot on the mound in major league game for the first time since May 19 of last season. While he wasn't especially impressive during his rehab outings with a 14:12 strikeout-to-walk ratio, the hitting-challenged Marlins should make things easy on Danks in his first start of 2013. |
|
Donald Veal (P) CHI-A |
5/22/2013 |
| Veal was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. |
Veal will be shipped out to create room for John Danks, who has been announced as the starter for Friday's game. With a 9.45 ERA and 5:8 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 13 appearances with the White Sox this season, Veal probably won't be the top candidate to get called up for bullpen help anytime soon. |
|
Adam Dunn (1B) CHI-A |
5/22/2013 |
| Dunn is still feeling some of the effects of his back spasms but says it hasn't presented any issues with his hitting, the CSN Chicago reports. |
Though his .168 batting average might suggest that Dunn has a very loose definition of "issues with hitting," he characterized the pain as mostly "vertical," presenting more problems in the field for him in getting his body loose. He'll continue to play exclusively at DH until his back feels a bit better. |

| The Chicago Tribune reports that manager Jerry Manuel's job will be in jeopardy if the club fails to improve after the All-Star break. "I've believed in the talent from Day One. I continue to believe in it. But we'd better get our stuff together and we'd better get it together in a hurry at the start of the second half", GM Kenny Williams said. Possible replacement candidates named in the article include Jim Fregosi and Buddy Bell. |
