| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Bud Norris (P) HOU |
5/22/2013 |
| Norris (back) said he doesn't anticipate missing his next start, MLB.com reports. |
The decision may not be in Norris' hands after he left his last two starts early with the back spasms. For now, he'll receive massage treatment and go through a more thorough prevention process in an attempt to ensure the issue doesn't crop up again. In spite of the back woes, Norris has been one of the few bright spots for the Astros, particularly at Minute Maid Park, where he has posted a 1.93 ERA through six starts this season. |
|
Nick Tropeano (P) HOU |
5/22/2013 |
| Tropeano, 22, has a 3.50 ERA and 41:14 K:BB ratio through 43.2 innings for Double-A Corpus Christi. |
On the downside, Tropeano was rocked in his last outing. He allowed seven runs on seven hits in just 3.2 innings Saturday. |
|
Mike Foltynewicz (P) HOU |
5/22/2013 |
| Foltynewicz, 21, has a 1.13 ERA and 17:6 K:BB ratio in 16 innings since being promoted to Double-A. |
The 6-4 righty notched a 3.81 ERA and 29:14 K:BB ratio in 26 innings at High-A before the promotion. He has been even better since the promotion; opposing batters are hitting just .179 against him at Double-A. Likewise, Folty has been getting a bevy of ground balls to the tune of a 1.64 GO:AO ratio. |
|
Bobby Doran (P) HOU |
5/22/2013 |
| Doran, 24, has a 3.92 ERA and 35:11 K:BB ratio through 39 innings for Double-A Corpus Christi. |
On the downside, Doran has been blown up in his last two outings, yielding 10 runs in just 4.1 innings. |
|
Jiovanni Mier (SS) HOU |
5/22/2013 |
| Mier, 22, is batting .200/.287/.317 with four home runs, 14 RBI and four steals through 40 games for Double-A Corpus Christi. |
Mier slashed .292/.296/.409 in 46 games at High-A last season, but does not have much power and stole just six bases. He has also battled strikeout problems in 2013, fanning 45 times in 40 contests. |
|
George Springer (OF) HOU |
5/22/2013 |
| Springer, 23, is batting .294/.397/.614 with 13 home runs, 32 RBI and 14 steals through 41 games for Double-A Corpus Christi. |
Despite indications to the contrary, it would seem that once the Super-2 deadline passes, Springer could be called up to the big club due to the extreme lack of talent in the current outfield for the 'Stros. |
|
Josh Fields (P) HOU |
5/22/2013 |
| Fields (forearm) is expected to throw two innings for Double-A Corpus Christi on Thursday, MLB.com reports. |
Fields has looked good during his first couple of rehab outings, making an activation from the DL seemingly around the corner. His role is currently unclear in the Astros' muddled relief picture. |
|
Matt Dominguez (3B) HOU |
5/22/2013 |
| Dominguez is out of Wednesday's lineup with a minor quadriceps injury, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports. |
With the Astros on an off-day Thursday, manager Bo Porter wanted to give his young third baseman two days off to afford him some adequate recovery time. Expect him to be back in the lineup throughout the weekend series against the Athletics. |
|
Matt Dominguez (3B) HOU |
5/22/2013 |
| Dominguez is out of the Astros' lineup Wednesday against the Royals. |
In his stead, Jimmy Paredes will man the hot corner, while Trevor Crowe covers right field. Dominguez himself has notched two hits in each of the past two games, with a homer and three RBI during that brief span. |
