| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Daric Barton (1B) OAK |
5/18/2013 |
| Barton was designated for assignment on Saturday by the A's. |
Barton was designated in March by the A's and was not claimed, so it is possible he could remain in the system if he clears waivers again. Barton was just 3 for 21 in his time with the A's this year which continues his three year trend of being terrible at the plate. |
|
Chris Young (OF) OAK |
5/18/2013 |
| Young was activated from the DL on Saturday by the A's. |
Young will return to his role of playing against all left handed pitchers and against some righties. He displayed speed and power before going on the DL, but is only hitting .172. |
|
Adam Rosales (2B) OAK |
5/18/2013 |
| Rosales went 1-for-3 and hit the game-winning home run against the Royals on Friday. |
Rosales sprinted around the bases with excitement as his home run finished off a nice late comeback for Oakland. He doesn't play regularly enough to have much value in fantasy leagues, but if there were an injury at all, he would likely have himself pretty close to a full-time job. He's not one to roster right now, but he should be on your watch-list. |
|
Josh Donaldson (3B) OAK |
5/18/2013 |
| Donaldson went 2-for-3 and hit a solo home run against the Royals on Friday. |
Donaldson has caught fire again this season and is now in the midst of a six-game hit streak in which he is batting .478 (11-for-23) with two solo home runs and five runs scored. His power production may have slowed down lately, but he is still batting .323 on the season. |
|
Grant Balfour (P) OAK |
5/18/2013 |
| Balfour pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his seventh save of the season and preserve the A's win over the Royals on Friday. |
Balfour hasn't allowed a run in his last seven appearances and has notched four saves while posting an 11:4 K:BB. He continues to pitch effectively and should be considered a reliable, though low-end, closer. |
|
Jarrod Parker (P) OAK |
5/18/2013 |
| Parker gave up one run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts against the Royals on Friday. |
It was Parker's second consecutive quality start and third in his last four outings, so there is definite improvement from the slow start he endured this season. He's still sporting a bloated 6.04 ERA and 1.70 WHIP, as well as an unimpressive 35:24 K:BB over 47.2 innings, so with a start in Texas next week, it's going to be difficult for him to build off this recent momentum. |
|
Chris Young (OF) OAK |
5/18/2013 |
| Young (quadriceps) was removed from his rehab outing Thursday with Triple-A Sacramento after he experienced some cramping but was back in Oakland Friday workign with the A's strength and conditioning coach and could be ready to return Saturday, according to A's official site. |
Young is batting just .172 with four home runs and 15 RBI over 23 games this season. Injuries continue to be a problem for him, but the fact remains that he is still just a fourth outfielder and has minimal fantasy upside, at best. |
|
Zach Neal (P) OAK |
5/17/2013 |
| Neal, 24, has a 2.63 ERA and 35:10 K:BB ratio through 48 innings for Double-A Midland. |
A 17th-round pick by the Marlins in 2010 out of the University of OKlahoma, Neal is perhaps most famous for being the pitcher who Bryce Harper blew a kiss to in a game in 2011 following a home run in a Low-A contest. Neal has a decent repertoire of pitches but is not overpowering. |
|
Chris Young (OF) OAK |
5/17/2013 |
| Young (quadriceps) will not be activated from the DL on Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. |
Originally planning on returning Wednesday, the Athletics don't yet seem completely comfortable with how Young is moving around, so he'll remain on the DL for now. It doesn't sound like he's hit any major sort of setback, so his return nonetheless seems forthcoming. |
