| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Matt Moore (P) TB |
5/20/2013 |
| Moore allowed just one run over seven innings Sunday against the Orioles to improve to 8-0 on the season. |
Moore has been great all year, and Sunday might have been his best performance, given the opponent and that he allowed just one walk in the game. |
|
Jeff Beliveau (P) TB |
5/19/2013 |
| Beliveau was optioned back to Triple-A Durham on Sunday, the Tampa Bay Times reports. |
Beliveau was called up for Sunday's victory at Baltimore but did not make an appearance. The move was made to bring up Jake Odorizzi from Durham, as he is expected to act as the rotation replacement to David Price (triceps). |
|
Jake Odorizzi (P) TB |
5/19/2013 |
| Odorizzi will take over David Price's (triceps) place in the rotation, as long as the ace is sidelined, the Tampa Tribune reports. |
Price is only slated to miss two or three starts, which should allow Odorizzi ample opportunity to show his worth. In his eight nods at Triple-A Durham this season, Odorizzi is 4-0 with a 3.83 ERA, 1.109 WHIP, and 47:15 K:BB ratio across 44.2 innings. |
|
Alex Torres (P) TB |
5/19/2013 |
| Torres was sent back to Triple-A Durham on Sunday, the Tampa Bay Times reports. |
Torres made two appearance since he was called up Thursday, actually earning the win Saturday with a scoreless four innings. He'll slot into the rotation once again at Durham, acting as organizational depth. |
|
Jeff Beliveau (P) TB |
5/19/2013 |
| Beliveau has been called up by the Rays, the Tampa Bay Tribune reports. |
It's largely assumed that he'll be sent down Monday when Jake Odorizzi is promoted to replace David Price in the rotation, but Beliveau will provide manager Joe Maddon with an extra arm in the bullpen for Sunday's game. |
|
Matt Joyce (OF) TB |
5/18/2013 |
| Joyce went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI in Saturday's win over the Orioles. |
Entering Saturday, Joyce was just 2-for-12 over his last five games but he broke out in a big way against the Orioles on Saturday. His batting average on the season now stands at .246 to go along with seven home runs and 18 RBI. |
|
Jose Molina (C) TB |
5/18/2013 |
| Molina (hamstring) said he is "okay" after leaving Saturday's game, and manager Joe Maddon said Molina will be available to play Sunday, the Tampa Tribune reports. |
It looks like Molina simply tweaked his hamstring sliding into second base. It may be something to keep an eye on in the short term, but there does not appear to be a DL stint in the offing here. |
|
Roberto Hernandez (P) TB |
5/18/2013 |
| Hernandez allowed five runs over two innings and did not factor in the decision Saturday against the Orioles. |
He gave up eight hits while walking none and striking out one. Two home runs in the first inning were mainly responsibly for his early exit, but fortunately for Hernandez his offense was able to put up 10 runs and he avoided being charged with a loss. His record on the season remains at 2-4 to go along with a 5.24 ERA, 42 strikeouts and 13 walks. |

| The Rays have announced whom they'll send to the Arizona Fall League this winter, the Tampa Tribune reports. Triple-A RHP Chris Mason will join five Double-A players (LHP James Houser, RHP Ryan Reid, C Matt Spring, IF Rhyne Hughes and OF J.T. Hall) on the roster of the Peoria Javelinas this fall. |

3/27/2008 |
| The Rays have already set a franchise record for most spring training wins in one season (17-6-2 through Wednesday), the St. Petersburg Times reports. While everyone involved quickly admits that spring training records don't mean much, Rays manager Joe Maddon takes their spring record as just one piece of evidence that the Rays have "been doing the little things properly" this spring. The times also did some research to show that, perhaps, extreme success in the spring is a sign of good things to come; of the five best spring won-loss records posted since 1980 (a list the Rays would crack at their current pace), each of those five teams made the playoffs. |
