Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Jose De Leon, LAD at SD ($25): De Leon has been a bit up and down over his first three starts and was hit hard by the D-backs in his last appearance, but brings some tournament upside versus the Padres, who have a .288 wOBA and 25.4 percent strikeout rate over the last seven days as well as a .290 wOBA and 25 percent strikeout rate overall against right-handed pitching. De Leon will also have the pitcher-friendly dimensions of Petco Park as his backdrop, furthering his case.

Seth Lugo, NYM at MIA ($32): Lugo is another young starter who could be in a good position Wednesday. He's been even better on the road than at home over his brief career, generating a 2.49 ERA and allowing just a .276 wOBA over 25.1 innings away from Citi Field. He's already flashed a 24-fantasy point ceiling on three different occasions this season and also stymied this same Marlins squad over six innings on Aug. 19, generating 19 fantasy points.

Catcher

Sandy Leon, BOS at NYY ($7): How the mighty have fallen. It's hard to believe Leon is now at min price, but the drop has been prompted by a prolonged slump that has seen him hit just .221 over the last 20 games. The discount and likelihood that many have become disenchanted with him makes him a solid tournament play in the right matchup, which he draws in the form of Yankees starter Bryan Mitchell. Mitchell has been equally bad against both handedness of hitter, allowing a .369 wOBA to left-handed batters. The switch-hitting Leon has been better against southpaws but does boast a solid .330 wOBA against righties, along with a 39.1 percent hard contact rate against them on the road.

First Base

Joey Votto, CIN at STL ($21): It's hard to believe that Votto was musing about retirement early this season when he seemed lost at the plate, considering what he's done in the second half of the season. He checks into Wednesday with a whopping .396 average, .470 wOBA, .264 ISO, a 34.5 percent hard contact rate and six homers over his last 24 games, along with an active nine-game hitting streak. He's also pounded righties all season and even moreso on the road, where he's tallied a .441 wOBA, .259 ISO, 21.6 percent HR/FB rate and 37.1 percent hard contact rate. Cardinals starter Mike Leake has seen left-handed hitters blast 13 of the 20 homers he's given up this season and has surrendered a .361 wOBA and nine of those round-trippers at Busch Stadium.

Second Base

Jose Altuve, HOU vs. SEA ($12): Altuve's price jumps off the screen Wednesday and his remarkable consistency makes him ideal for cash games or tournaments. He's currently sporting a four-game hitting streak and owns a .379 wOBA against left-handed pitching, along with a massive 48.5 percent hard contact rate when facing that handedness at home. Mariners starter James Paxton has been solid this season overall but has given up a 33.6 percent hard contact rate to right-handed hitters on the road.

Third Base

Adonis Garcia, ATL vs. PHI ($17): Garcia provides cost-effective exposure to Phillies southpaw Adam Morgan, who's given up a .391 wOBA , a 2.13 HR/9 and 37.5 percent hard contact rate to right-handed hitters on the road. Garcia counters with a .301 average and .333 wOBA against southpaws, along with a 35.2 percent hard contact rate against them at Turner Field.

Shortstop

Corey Seager, LAD at SD ($16): Seager checks into Wednesday with a .345 wOBA over his last 24 games, making his discounted price a bit surprising. As usual, he's been lethal against right-handed pitching, as evidenced by his .401 wOBA, .225 ISO, 21 percent HR/FB rate and 39.9 percent hard contact rate. Padres starter Luis Perdomo has actually been very effective against left-handed hitters at Petco Park but has been somewhat fortunate as well, as he's yielded a robust 40 percent hard contact rate to that handedness at his home stadium.

Outfield

Curtis Granderson, NYM at MIA ($21): Marlins starter Jose Urena has had his share of struggles against left-handed hitters, with a .341 wOBA and 5.29 xFIP along with a 35 percent hard contact rate when facing them at home. Granderson has smacked 23 of his 30 homers on the season off righties, and owns a .371 wOBA, .276 ISO, 38.6 percent hard contact rate and 13 homers when facing them on the road. He's also racked up double-digit fantasy points in four of his last six games, and has eight homers and a .397 wOBA in his last 23 contests overall.

Yasmany Tomas, ARI at WAS ($14): Tomas at a modest price against a hittable lefty is never a bad idea, and that scenario presents itself Wednesday. Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez has given up 18 homers on the season to right-handed hitters, along with a .322 wOBA and 33.7 percent hard contact rate. Tomas has decimated southpaws all season and his numbers against them on the road include a .501 wOBA, .375 ISO, 51.1 percent hard contact rate and an incredible 75 percent HR/FB rate.

Randal Grichuk, STL vs. CIN ($17): Grichuk homered Tuesday as part of a 16-fantasy point effort and now owns a .373 wOBA and whopping 52.5 percent hard contact rate over his last 25 games. He's also blasted right-handed pitching at home, where he boasts a .379 wOBA, .296 ISO, 26.3 percent HR/FB rate and 50 percent hard contact rate versus that handedness. While Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani has been very tough on righty bats this season, he has surrendered a .347 wOBA, six homers and generated a 5.09 ERA over his last four starts.
