2024 Fantasy Outlook
DeSclafani was limited to just 99.2 innings in 2023 due to a flexor strain after throwing just 19 frames in 2022 because of an ankle injury. He did not require surgery and the hope is that he will be ready for Opening Day in 2024, but it's far from a guarantee. When on the mound, DeSclafani saw a decline in his strikeout rate (7.1 K/9), a worrisome 8.8% swinging strike rate and the second-highest walk rate of his career. At age 34 with two years of health issues, he's not a sure bet to hold down a rotation spot. Read Past Outlooks
Opens on 60-day IL
The Twins placed DeSclafani (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After being acquired from the Mariners in January, DeSclafani was expected to open the season as a back-end starter for the Twins, but he was diagnosed with a right elbow strain following an appearance in a minor-league spring training game in mid-March and will be headed for an extended absence. The Twins haven't offered up a firm timeline for his return, but after landing on the 60-day IL, DeSclafani will be sidelined for at least two months.

DeSclafani was limited to five starts due to an ankle injury that eventually required surgery, so his 2022 campaign was essentially a lost season. The right-hander was a key rotation piece for San Francisco in 2021 with a 3.17 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 152:42 K:BB across 167.2 innings, making for the best season of his big-league career. DeSclafani has had some trouble with year-to-year consistency throughout his career, but he could be had at a bit of a discount for 2023 given his limited action last year. The fact his injury was an ankle issue and not related to his arm is also an encouraging sign for a potential bounce back. Another season at the pitcher-friendly Oracle Park is also working in his favor.
