Double-A redemption story
PCincinnati Reds
May 11, 2021
Howard, the Reds' first-round pick in 2014, is pitching in relief at Double-A Chattanooga and has had two good outings so far, hitting 97 mph on the radar while commanding his slider, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
This is Howard's first game action since 2019, when he was released by the Reds at Chattanooga. Expectations for Howard are pretty low, but it's not out of the question that he could ultimately carve out a role in the major-league bullpen later this summer.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
It's starting to appear as though drafting Howard in the first round of the 2014 draft was a mistake by the Reds. The former University of Virginia hurler flopped in a conversion to starting and ended the 2015 campaign with a 6.63 ERA and 2.21 WHIP at High-A Daytona. The organization has attempted this process with two of their high-profile prospects, also doing the same with Michael Lorenzen, with just middling results. At this point, they may think twice before spending another early draft pick on a college reliever. Howard will probably repeat High-A to try and regain some of his prospect status in 2016.
Howard's numbers at Low-A Dayton and subsequently in the Arizona Fall League should be taken with a grain of salt, as the 2014 first-round pick spent his senior year at Virginia as a reliever, only to be used as a starter in his first taste of professional ball. The Reds have had some success turning their relief prospects into starters, such as Mike Lorenzen, so 2015 could be a growth year for Howard. As a starter, his fastball was topping out at 95-96 mph after reaching 98 as a reliever at UVA. His second-best pitch is a slider that many believe projects to be a strong offering for him. This appears to be a draft strategy by the Reds under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement -- find some live arms among relievers that might be a little cheaper to sign and then try to convert them into starting. Even if it doesn't work out, subsequent relief work could still be a safety net.
