2019 Fantasy Outlook
Brown showcased considerable improvement as a sophomore, increasing his modest averages across several categories (points, boards, dimes, threes and minutes) while upping his field-goal and three-point shooting percentages. The offseason departure of Malcolm Brogdon opens up playing time at shooting guard that could result in a bigger role for Brown going forward. Nevertheless, he'll likely compete with Pat Connaughton, among others, for those minutes. One cause for concern regarding Brown's ability to seize a more demanding role is that he struggled badly at 2019 Las Vegas Summer League, recording averages of 10.7 points (23.9 FG%, 33.3 3P%, 80.0 FT%), 6.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists versus 3.3 turnovers, 2.0 threes and 1.3 steals in 29.6 minutes across three contests. Perhaps one shouldn't read too much into this small sample size from summer league, but it's not exactly a promising indicator that Brown is on the verge of a breakout campaign. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio

Sterling Damarco Brown was born in 1995 in the Chicago suburb of Maywood, Illinois. He played high school ball at his hometown Proviso East High School, leading the team to a state runner-up finish in 2012 and a state semifinal appearance in 2013. By the time Brown graduated, he was a Mr. Basketball finalist and named All-State third team after averaging 13.4 points and 10.9 rebounds while leading his team to a 30-5 record. He spent the next four years at Southern Methodist University, playing in a combined 136 games over four seasons and starting in 106. Brown improved his points per game total from 4.4 in his freshman year to 13.4 as a senior, good enough for 13th in the AAC. The 6.5 rebounds he pulled in per game during his senior season ranked him 16th in the league. You can follow Sterling Brown on Twitter @Thatnegus_sb.

College/International Summary

Brown was attracted to SMU from Illinois by coach Larry Brown. The 6-6 wing started 26 games as a freshman and recorded 4.4 points and 3.8 rebounds. He also showed promise as a marksman by hitting 36.2 percent of his three-pointers. The guard would notch a season-high 15 points in a win over Memphis. He came off the bench for the first half of his sophomore season, but started the majority of the American Athletic slate and averaged 5.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists. The team was put on probation during Brown's junior season, but managed to win 25 games. Brown ended up contributing 10.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists while dropping 53.6 percent of his long-range shots. The wing led the Mustangs to a 17-1 conference record with 13.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists. He also scored at least 16 points in his last six games, including a first-round loss to USC in the NCAA Tournament. Brown went on to participate in 109 victories at SMU - the most in school history - and ranked Top-15 in rebounds, assists, three-pointers, and steals.

Brown finished with 23 points (9-16 FG, 5-8 3Pt), two boards, two assists and one steal in 30 minutes of a 126-113 win against the Wizards on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Brown matched a career best by sinking five threes in the game. With a handful of Bucks regulars sitting out, the bench had a chance to step up and take the reigns. Brown took over the role of scorer, leading his team in attempts in the contest. He's still fighting for every minute on the floor when Milwaukee has all its options available, but Brown has proven he capable when he gets the chance. Milwaukee plays Memphis on Thursday.

2018

Brown, in his second season in the NBA, appeared in 58 games for the Bucks (seven starts). He saw 17.8 minutes per game, averaging 6.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists -- all career highs. He also shot 46.5 percent from the field, 36.1 percent from the field and 69.0 percent from the charity stripe, leading to a career-best 56.3 true-shooting percentage. Brown also posted a positive net rating (plus-1) for the first time in his career. On Mar. 31, during a one-point loss to the Hawks on the road, Brown had the best game of his season. He posted a career-high 27 points (10-22 FG, 5-10 3Pt, 2-2 FT), plus nine rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block across 33 minutes. It was his only 20-point game of the season and marked one of the three times he posted at least three steals. Across his seven starts, he averaged 13.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists while totaling six steals and three blocks. Brown also appeared in 11 playoff games for Milwaukee, who went to the Eastern Conference Finals. His best performance was in Game 1 against the Pistons in the first round, a 35-point win in which Brown racked up 11 points (3-5 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 2-2 FT), seven assists, three rebounds, three steals and one block in 25 minutes.

2017

Following four years at SMU, Brown was selected with the 46th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. He appeared in 54 games for the Bucks, including four starts, and averaged 4.0 points and 2.6 rebounds in 14.4 minutes. Brown shot 40.0 percent from the field, 35.2 percent from three and 87.5 percent from the free-throw line. He also spent three games in the G League with the Wisconsin Herd. There, he averaged 21.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in 32.7 minutes. Arguably his best NBA performance took place Jan. 28 during a 14-point win over the Bulls. In 28 minutes, he posted 12 points (5-8 FG, 2-3 3Pt), six rebounds, two steals and one assist. It was one of his seven games with double-digit points. It was also one of Brown's four performances with at least one made three, one rebound, one assist and one steal. The Bucks finished the season 44-38 and lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Celtics. Brown played 13 total minutes in seven games, accumulating seven points, two rebounds and one steal.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
The 46th overall pick in the 2017 Draft, Brown began earning relatively consistent playing time with the Bucks in early January as a result of his solid three-point stroke (35.2 percent) and aggressive defense (a combined 2.0 steals/blocks per 36 minutes). However, he struggled to regularly see over 20 minutes per night considering the Bucks’ deep wing rotation -- a situation that hasn't changed heading into 2018-19. Brown has even gained some competition, as the team used the 17th overall pick to draft guard Donte DiVincenzo. Overall, it seems unlikely he becomes Fantasy relevant this season.
