Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Omari Spellman was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He has a younger brother, Arashma Parks, and a younger sister, Taiyier Park. Both have played college basketball: Arashma for Temple University and Taiyier for Michigan State. Spellman bounced around between multiple high schools. As a sophomore at North Royalton High School in North Royalton, Ohio, he averaged 22 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Spellman then attended the MacDuffie School in Granby, Massachusetts, for his junior year before ending up at St. Thomas More in Montville, Connecticut, as a senior. In 2015-16, he averaged 16 points and seven rebounds per game for St. Thomas More. He was selected to play in the 2016 Jordan Brand Classic, during which he posted 12 points and 15 rebounds. During his free time, Spellman writes poetry and is working on a novel. Learn more about Spellman by following him on Twitter (@Omarispellman) and on Instagram (@omarispellman). As a 6-foot-9 freshman, Spellman played for the Wildcat team that won the 2018 National Championship. The Ohio native had to sit out a season as a partial academic qualifier and was able to lose more than 50 pounds. He started all but one game and opened the season with a double-double, the first of 11 during the campaign. Spellman had a season-high 27 points in a win over Temple and topped 20 points once more during the season. In the six-game run to the championship in the NCAA Tournament, Spellman hit 12 three-pointers and averaged 11.5 points and 8.8 rebounds, improving upon his season averages of 10.9 points and 8.0 rebounds. His awards included Big East Rookie of the Year and NCAA Tournament All-Region. The forward declared for the 2018 NBA Draft and was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the 30th overall pick.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
Spellman, Atlanta's first-round pick just a season ago, will play for Golden State after being traded for Damian Jones and a second-round pick. The forward from Villanova averaged just 5.9 points and 4.2 rebounds in 17.5 minutes, playing a small role as a rookie. He appeared in just 46 games due to injury, but he expects to be fully healthy for the upcoming campaign. Spellman showed promise at Villanova as a capable defender and rebounder with an outside shot. He'll likely be employed as floor-spacer in Golden State, though his usage may be low. The Warriors have a crowded frontcourt that includes Willie Cauley-Stein, Draymond Green and Kevon Looney. Add in the fact that Golden State typically uses a multi-player rotation at center, and Spellman's opportunities could certainly be lacking. He's avoidable in most fantasy leagues this season.
Spellman declared for the 2018 NBA Draft after just one season at Villanova. The 6-foot-9 big man was part of a loaded roster, which likely played a part in him averaging just 10.8 points per game. That said, Spellman was still outstanding on the glass (8.0 rebounds per game) and averaged 1.5 blocks, so he was a capable rim protector despite being undersized. In addition, he was able to hit 1.6 three-pointers per contest and finished with an impressive 43.4 percent clip from beyond the arc, so Spellman does have the floor-spacing ability that NBA teams covet from big men. His production in just one year of college ball earned Spellman a selection with the final pick of the first-round of this year's draft. The 21-year-old now joins a fairly crowded frontcourt rotation in Atlanta that has rising star John Collins locked in at power forward and Dewayne Dedmon reclaiming his top spot at center. With Alex Len also being signed in the offseason, Spellman's quickest path to playing time will likely be at the four. Still, considering the aforementioned bodies, Spellman is only expected to see the floor in a complementary capacity as a rookie and isn't going to be a Fantasy contributor in the bulk of leagues. Look for the 2018-19 campaign to be a developmental one for Spellman.
