Dewan Hernandez was born in 1996 in Miami. Hernandez is the son of Christina Hernandez and Dewell Huell and has six brothers and sisters. His first name is pronounced deh-WAN. NFL running back Duke Johnson is Dewan's cousin. Hernandez attended Miami Norland High School and played on three straight state championship squads. As a senior, he was named a 2016 McDonald's All-American. In college, following his 2017-18 sophomore season at the University of Miami, Dewan legally changed his name from Huell to Hernandez to honor his mother. Dewan Hernandez played college ball at the University of Miami during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. As a freshman, Hernandez started 15 of 32 games for the Hurricanes and averaged 5.8 points and 3.1 boards over 17 minutes per contest. On Nov. 16, 2016, he scored a season-high 15 points at North Florida. During his sophomore season, Hernandez averaged 11.4 points, 6.7 rebounds (14th in ACC), and 1.0 blocks over 26 minutes per game. He was also the only Hurricane to start all 32 games for Miami. Hernandez led the 'Canes to the NCAA Tournament, but they lost in the first round to underdog Loyola University.
