Ja Morant
Ja Morant
21-Year-Old GuardG
Memphis Grizzlies
2019 Fantasy Outlook
Morant will presumably take over the Grizzlies' starting point guard spot, which was vacated as a result of the trade of Mike Conley to the Jazz. Morant, the 2018-19 OVC Player of the Year and Consensus All-American, averaged 24.5 points, 10.0 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals across 36.6 minutes last year with Murray State. He's lauded for his athleticism and playmaking ability, but an underdeveloped jumpshot and tendency to turn the ball over could be a cause of early struggles in the NBA. Rookie point guards can often get off to a rough start, but fantasy owners should be confident that the rookie will have a big role with the Grizzlies right out of the gate, and Memphis is likely to let Morant get plenty of reps considering the team's rebuilding status. Morant makes for a safer pick in points leagues, where a potentially troublesome field-goal percentage and lack of threes won't damage his fantasy value. Read Past Outlooks

College/International Summary

As a sophomore, Morant was named to the All-America first team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches after the 2018-19 season. He was also pegged as the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year. The guard led the nation in assists in 2018-19 season with 331, which were also the sixth most in NCAA single-season history. Morant was also eighth in the country in average scoring (24.5 points) and ninth in double-doubles (20). He was also the MVP of the OVC Tournament after averaging 32.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists en route to the tournament title. Despite losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament (to Florida), Morant tied an NCAA first-round record with 16 assists. As a freshman Morant was named to the All-OVC first and All-OVC Newcomer teams. Morant declared for the 2019 NBA Draft after his sophomore season. The Datzell, South Carolina native was drafted No. 2 overal by the Grizzlies.

Wins Rookie of the Year
GMemphis Grizzlies
September 3, 2020
Morant was voted the 2019-20 Rookie of the Year, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
There was never much doubt, as Morant had an electric first season with the Grizzlies, and Zion Williamson ultimately missed too much time to be considered for the No.1 spot in the voting. Morant's pre-bubble averages -- seeding games did not factor into voting -- were 17.6 points, 6.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds across 30.0 minutes per game. Built into his case were the extremely low preseason expectations for the Grizzlies, who were considered one of the worst teams in the NBA. However, Morant's presence helped carry them to a play-in game against the Blazers for the last spot in the Western Conference playoff picture. Though the performances didn't count toward the award, Morant shouldered a huge role in the seeding games, averaging 20.8 points, 9.7 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 38.3 minutes.

Past Season Summaries

Following two college seasons at Murray State, Morant was selected by the Grizzlies with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-3 point guard made his NBA debut during the first game of the season, Oct. 23 against the Heat, recording 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block in 25 minutes. The rookie quickly got more comfortable, as just two games later, in a one-point win over the Nets, Morant recorded a season-high 30 points, nine assists, four rebounds, one steal and one block in 32 minutes. On Nov. 13, during a two-point win over the Hornets, Morant recorded his first double-double, accumulating 23 points, 11 assists, one steal and one rebound in 30 minutes. He would go on to post 14 more double-doubles throughout the season. Morant dished out a season-high 14 dimes twice -- Jan. 10 in a win over the Spurs and Feb. 29 in a win over the Lakers. He also posted one of his two triple-doubles in February during a win over the Wizards in which he had 27 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, one steal and one block. Morant's second triple-double occurred during the NBA bubble in Orlando, accumulating 12 points, a season-high 13 rebounds and 10 assists in a win over the Bucks. Morant's excellent play resulted in him being voted the Rookie of the Year for his play before the hiatus. Before the break, Morant averaged 17.6 points -- 49.1 FG%, 36.7 3Pt%, 77.0 FT% -- 6.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 30.0 minutes. In September, Morant was a unanimous selection to the NBA's All-Rookie First Team
