Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Owens was born in 1995 in Utica, New York to parents Cassandra Wallace and Renard Owens. He played AAU ball in Baltimore's Finest program and first attended St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel, Maryland. He later spent a postgraduate year at Mount Zion Prep in Baltimore. Coming out of high school, Owens was a consensus top-100 prospect and was rated the eighth-best prospect in the state of Maryland in the 2014 class. Owens has a degree in sport management, which he obtained in May 2018 from St. John's University. He finished his collegiate career at Texas Tech, however, and the Red Raiders finished as runner-up in the 2019 National Title game. You can follow Owens on Twitter (@Sneaky_Bounce). Owens had a four-year collegiate career, and he spent time with three different programs. He began with the Volunteers, averaging 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds through 28 games (five starts). Owens elected to transfer after his freshman year and landed at St. John's, but was forced to sit out the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He was a fixture in the Red Storm rotation afterwards, averaging 5.2 points and 5.2 rebounds as a sophomore and 8.4 points and 5.9 rebounds as a junior. The most team and individual success of Owens' career came as a senior, however. After graduating, he decided to spend his senior season with Texas Tech. Owens started 37 of a possible 38 games that season, where he averaged 8.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks. It was the third consecutive year he had averaged 2.2 rejections or greater, and this helped him be named to the 2018-19 Big 12 All-Defensive team. He led the conference with 92 blocked shots and was second in the league in field-goal percentage (.676). Owens and the Red Raiders would make it all the way to the National Championship game that season, but fell to Virginia in overtime.

Owens (knee) is out for the remainder of Wednesday's Summer League game against the Jazz, Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Owens appeared to suffer a non-contact injury to his left leg while going up for a layup, and after staying down for some time, he managed to limp to the locker room under his own power. The extent of the injury remains unclear at this time, but the Mavs are calling it a left knee injury.
