Stay For a Nightcap! - America the Beautiful Edition

Indians 5 - Tigers 4

- Justin Masterson took a no-decision after he held the Tigers to 3 runs (2 earned) over 7 innings.  He struck out 7 and walked 2 in his 6th straight quality start.  Things got a little testy in the 8th when he hit Miguel Cabrera in the leg, before being pulled.  The Indians have now won 13 in a row at home.
- Phil Coke bounced back from a stinker against the Mariners (7 earned runs in 4.1 innings) with 6 innings of 2 run ball.  He too took a no-decision.  His strikeout rate (below 5.0 BB/9) will need to rise if he expects to succeed out there.
- Austin Jackson went 2-3 to raise his batting line to .194/.269/.269 and he stole his 3rd base of the season.  He hit from the 9th spot in the lineup with a walk and strikeout.  Hopefully he's starting to turn this around.
- With Detroit's 2 stolen bases in this game, Carlos Santana has thrown out only 1 of the 12 would be base stealers he's seen this season.  Might be time for opposing teams to test him more often.
- Joaquin Benoit got touched up again, this time for 3 earned runs.  As someone pointed out on Twitter today (I think Keith Law), Benoit has now given up more runs this season (10), than he did all last season (9).
- W: Chad Durbin (1-1), L: Joaquin Benoit (0-2), SV: Chris Perez (7)
- SB: Brennan Boesch (3), Austin Jackson (3), Michael Brantley (4)

Yankees 5 - Blue Jays 2

- Ivan Nova received his 2nd win, after he pitched 6.1 innings and allowed 2 earned runs.  He put 10 runners on base, so don't get too excited.
- Jesse Litsch got lit up by the Yanks for 5 earned runs in 6 innings.  It was his worst start thus far and should not inspire confidence.  At least Brett Cecil is also struggling down on the farm.
- Rajai Davis stole three bases to give him five in his last three games.  He was also caught stealing once.  Yeah, I think his ankle is fine.  I wish I had him stashed in all of my leagues.
- Curtis Granderson went 2-4 with a 3-run homer.  He's only one back of reigning HR champ, Jose Bautista
- W: Ivan Nova (2-2), L: Jesse Litsch (2-2), SV: Mariano Rivera (10)
- HR: Adam Lind (5), Curtis Granderson (8), Mark Teixeira (7)
- SB: Rajai Davis (4, 5, 6); CS: Rajai Davis (2), Brett Gardner (4)

Red Sox 3 - Mariners 2

- King Felix Hernandez was handed a no-decision, in what was one of his better starts this season.  He pitched 7 innings with 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and 10 strikeouts.  He threw first pitch strikes to 19 of the 28 batters he faced.  Poor run support keeps his record at 3-2, despite his 3.21 ERA and 1.17 WHIP.
- Tim Wakefield made a spot-start for the ill Clay Buchholz and held the Mariners to 1 run over 5.2 innings.  He was in line for the win, till Bobby Jenks came in and stunk up the joint.
- Maybe Bobby Jenks needed Ozzie Guillen more than he thought.  Jenks came into this game with a runner on 1st and then proceeded to give up a single, throw a wild pitch, walk a batter, walk another batter to plate a run, then walk another batter to plate a run, before ending things with a fly out.  His ERA is now 9.35.  Ouch.  His velocity is down and I wouldn't be surprised if he was concealing an injury.  He shouldn't be this bad.
- Jonathan Papelbon vultured a win, after Carl Crawford got a walk-off knock in the 9th.  Papelbon has really cut down on the walks this season with only two free passes in 10.1 innings of work.
- Marco Scutaro went 0-4 and is now 2-21 in his last seven games.  Jed Lowrie went 1-4 with a triple.
- W: Jonathan Papelbon (1-0), L: Jamey Wright (0-1)
- CS: Chone Figgins (4)

Angels 6 - Rays 5

- The Rays lucked out of having to face Jered Weaver as he missed the game with a stomach virus.  They instead got Tyler Chatwood, who pitched 4 innings and allowed 5 earned runs.  It was his fifth start and likely his worst.
- The Rays had Alex Cobb on the bump, so that leveled the playing field as he went 4.1 innings with 4 earned runs allowed.  He was optioned back down to Triple-A following the game, so his fantasy value was nil this time around.
- Matt Joyce stayed hot, going 3-3 with a walk, run, RBI, and stolen base.  He now has 10 hits in his last 5 games with 2 homers and 6 RBI.
- Felipe Lopez went 1-3 with a RBI, walk, and strikeout.  With Evan Longoria on the mend, expect Lopez to lose playing time, if not his roster spot, when the third baseman returns.
- Jordan Walden nailed down save number five with a perfect 9th.  He's allowed one earned run this season… one.
- W: Rich Thompson (1-1), L: Joel Peralta (1-1), SV: Jordan Walden (5)
- HR: Hank Conger (3)
- SB: Bobby Abreu (3), Howie Kendrick (2), B.J. Upton (7), Matt Joyce (3); CS: Mark Trumbo (1), John Jaso (1)

Orioles 6 - White Sox 4

- Only a callus could slow Zach Britton as he pitched 6 innings of 1-run ball.  The rookie was pulled after the 6th having thrown 95 pitches, so there was no real reason to push him.  He's now 5-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.19 WHIP.  I for one remain skeptical of Britton because of his 1.33 K/BB rate.  He's going to need to show better command through more strikeouts (only 1 in this game) or fewer walks (3.58 BB/9) to sustain this success.
- Gavin Floyd got blowed out, giving up 5 earned runs in the fifth inning, en route to 6 earned runs in six innings.  I'm starting to think he's the AL version of Ricky Nolasco in that his rate stats often say he should be better than his ERA.  His HR/FB rate is a robust 17.5|PERCENT|, that hopefully starts to normalize for his and the White Sox sake.
- Sergio Santos pitched a clean 9th and is still yet to be scored on.
- Nick Markakis hit a three run double.  It was his first RBI in over two weeks.
- Derek Lee went 0-4 with 4 strikeouts for the Golden Sombrero.  I own Lee in an AL only and have been trying to sell low, but at this point I think I'm going to have to ride it out.
- Gordon Beckham went 2-3 with a double, walk, and 2 runs.  It was his first extra base hit in 15 games.
- W: Zach Britton (5-1), L: Gavin Floyd (3-2), SV: Kevin Gregg (5)
- HR: Luke Scott (5), Mark Reynolds (3), Brent Lillibridge (3), Adam Dunn (3)
- SB: Brian Roberts (3)

Royals 10 - Twins 3

- Luke Hochevar evened his record to 3-3 with a quality start of 6.1 innings pitched and 3 earned runs allowed.  He struck out only 1 and walked 4, which isn't something you like to see.  He also gave up his 10th homer of the season in this game.
- Carl Pavano was visibly upset with himself, after he allowed 7 runs (6 earned) in 5.1 innings.  After he came out of the game, he took a bat to a trashcan and let it all out.  He gave up 12 hits in this one with no walks or strikeouts.  For someone that doesn't miss many bats, this is what can happen from time to time.
- Aaron Crow got 2 batters out and still has not been scored on this season in 14.1 innings.
- Justin Morneau hit his first homer since July 7th of last season.
- Mike Aviles had a full day offensively as he went 3-5 with a home run, 3 RBI, stolen base, and caught stealing.
- W: Luke Hochevar (3-3), L: Carl Pavano (2-3)
- HR: Justin Morneau (1), Mike Aviles (5), Jeff Francoeur (6)
- SB: Mike Aviles (6); CS: Mike Aviles (1)

A's 7 - Rangers 2

- Gio Gonzalez had a productive outing with 2 earned runs in 6.2 innings.  He struck out 7 with 7 base runners, in the win.  After two ho-hum starts, it's nice to see him come out and quiet this potent Rangers offense.
- Matt Harrison got five outs and in the process gave up 4 earned runs on 6 hits and 2 walks.  This now makes back-to-back disaster outings with no real command of his pitches.  Dave Bush came on in relief of Harrison and tossed 4.1 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) with 4 strikeouts and no walks.  Maybe Bush should have started this game.
- Coco Crisp, Conor Jackson, Kurt Suzuki, and Andy LaRoche all wrapped out two hits for the A's.  LaRoche is quietly batting .324/.390/.459.  I love Crisp's hair.
- W: Gio Gonzalez (3-2), L: Matt Harrison (3-3)
- SB: Josh Willingham (2); CS: Kurt Suzuki (1), Cliff Pennington (3)

Braves 6 - Cardinals 5

- Coming off his DUI allegation this week, Derek Lowe pitched like he was still in the bottle with 4 earned runs allowed in 5 innings.  Not a good week for the Braves PR in general.
- Jaime Garcia was perfect for four innings, before giving up a 2-run homer and RBI single in the 5th inning.  He ended with 6 innings pitched, 6 strikeouts, and a walk.
- Maybe the most important thing that happened in this game from a fantasy perspective is that Albert Pujols played third base to end the game.  If you're in a league give a player position eligibility based on only 1 game played at that spot, this is potentially very helpful as it gives your more roster flexibility.
- Pujols played third because David Freese broke his left hand on a Scott Linebrink pitch.  He'll go on the DL soon and potentially need surgery.
- I don't know who the red birds closer is, but I know it's not Ryan Franklin.  He took the loss in this one, after coming in with two outs in the 8th and staying to pitch the 9th.
- Lance Berkman and Matt Holliday each got two hits, one of which was a double.
- W: Jonny Venters (1-0), L: Ryan Franklin (0-3)
- HR: Alex Gonzalez (4)

Nationals 5 - Giants 2

- Jordan Zimmerman improved to 2-4 with 6 innings and 2 earned runs allowed.  His last two starts had been less than impressive, so he needed this.  He walked two in this game and his control is definitely starting to come around with a 1.77 BB/9 walk rate.  Once he starts, well I guess it could be if he starts, missing more bats, he should regain the form he had prior to having TJ surgery.
- Matt Cain with a quality start of 6 innings pitched and 3 earned runs allowed.  He's winless in his last three starts, but it's nothing to worry about.
- Ivan Rodriquez went 2-4 with a 2-run single.  He should start ceding more time to Wilson Ramos as we get farther into the season.
- Another scoreless outing for Drew Storen.  He hasn't given up an earned run since opening day.   I don't know which young closer I like more, Storen, Walden, or Kimbrel.
- Miguel Tejada was at 3B with Mike Fontenot at SS for the Panda-less Giants.
- W: Jordan Zimmerman (2-4), L: Matt Cain (2-2), SV: Drew Storen (5)
- SB: Danny Espinosa (2), Ian Desmond (10); CS: Darren Ford (3)

Astros 5 - Brewers 0

- Bud Norris dominated the Brewers in this one with 11 strikeouts in 7.2 shutout innings.  His slider was nearly untouchable as he threw it for 14 swinging strikes.  With a strikeout rate pushing 11.0 K/9 we could be seeing the next Brandon Morrow-esque breakout candidate here.  As an Astros fan, I'm very excited about his potential.
- Chris Narveson wasn't nearly as sharp with 4 earned runs over 6 innings.  To his credit, he struck out 7 and walked none, but a Carlos Lee 3-run bomb in the 6th sealed his fate.
- Speaking of Carlos Lee, he hurt his ribs when he came charging in to try and catch a ball in shallow left field.  He caught the knee of shortstop Angel Sanchez and was clearly in pain as he was carted off.  It's a shame this happened, especially when Lee looked like he might have been breaking out of his recent slump with the earlier mentioned home run.  As someone who has been critical of Lee's effort in the past, I have to commend him for his play in the field and on the base paths this season.  He's not fast, but at least I see him hustling when I watch him play.
- Mark Melancon got two outs, one via strikeout to end this game.  There's been talk on the airwaves here in Houston about Melancon possibly taking over the closer's role, once Wilton Lopez proves himself healthy enough to setup.  I think the team should keep Lyon in the role as long as possible to hopefully trade him, but that's just me.
- Brett Wallace with another hit to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
- W: Bud Norris (2-1), L: Chris Narveson (1-2)
- HR: Carlos Lee (3)
- SB: Jason Bourgeois (8)

Pirates 8 - Rockies 4

- Another rough outing for Ubaldo Jimenez with 4 earned runs in 4 innings pitched.  He struckout 6, but allowed 10 runners on base, four via walk.  Once he starts to get a better feel for his control, he should start to see some better results.  For now, that's his third straight non-quality start.
- Charlie Morton improved to 3-1 with 8 runs of support, while he was still in the game.  It wasn't pretty as he allowed 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 5 walks.
- Pedro Alvarez went 2-4 with 2 runs, a walk, and a strikeout.  When I watch him swing, I'm surprised there are guys that strikeout more often than he does.
- Andrew McCutchen, Xavier Paul, Garrett Jones, and Lyle Overbay also notched two hits in this game.  Jones collected 3 RBI and is now batting .278/.388/.514.
- Brandon Wood played a little bit of shortstop in this game and went 1-2 at the plate.
- Matt Lindstrom with another scoreless outing to help his ERA down to 0.84.
- W: Charlie Morton (3-1), L: Ubaldo Jimenez (0-2)
- SB: Andrew McCutchen (4), Xavier Paul (1)

Padres 7 - Dodgers 0

- Dustin Moseley finally got his first win after allowing 7 earned runs in his first 5 starts combined.  This time he shutout the Dodgers for 7 innings with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.  It's hard to believe this will last, considering his track record, but then again this is only six starts, not a season.
- Jon Garland had a quality start against the Padres with 6 innings and 3 earned runs allowed.  He surprisingly struck out 8, but then again, it's the Padres.
- Mike Adams, 45 batters faced this season with 3 hits, no walks, and 13 strikeouts… check him out.
- Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to 27 games, although it was somewhat questionable as the ball hit off of Brad Hawpe's glove at first base, back into play.
- Hong-Chih Kuo was pretty rusty in his first appearance since coming of the DL.  He allowed 4 runs and got only 1 out.  It might be a while before he's ready to start setting up or even think about taking over for Broxton in the 9th.
- W: Dustin Moseley (1-3), L: Jon Garland (1-2)
- SB: Chase Headley (2)

Marlins 9 - Reds 5

- Ricky Nolasco improved to 3-0 with 7 innings and 3 earned runs.  He gave up 2 home runs, which is nothing new to Nolasco owners.  Last season his HR/9 was 1.37 and this season it's already 1.34.  It's a large part of why he never seems able to perform to the level his rate stats say he should.
- Bronson Arroyo allowed 3 homers, en route to 5 earned runs in 7 innings.  One of those homers was Hanley Ramirez's first of the season.
- Maybe it was something in the air, but the ball was really flying out on Sunday with 7 home runs.
- Chris Valaika played 3B for the Reds with Scott Rolen still on the DL (shoulder).
- Emilio Bonifacio went 1-3 with a 3-run homer.  I don't know if this homer or Elvis Andrus' is more surprising.  Either way, I'd like to see Scott Cousins get more playing time at LF, over Bonifacio.  Cousins at least offers more power with some speed.
- W: Ricky Nolasco (3-0), L: Bronson Arroyo (3-3), SV: Leo Nunez (9)
- HR: Hanley Ramirez (1), Mike Stanton (3), Greg Dobbs (2), John Buck (3), Emilio Bonifacio (1), Jay Bruce (5), Brandon Phillips (4)
- SB: Drew Stubbs (10)

Diamondbacks 4 - Cubs 3

- Daniel Hudson tossed 7 innings of 3-run ball at the Cubs and it stood up.  He struck out 5 and walked 1 in the win.  After a somewhat shaky start to the season, he now has back to back quality starts and wins.
- J.J. Putz got the save in this one after giving up a leadoff double to Marlon Byrd.
- Ryan Roberts went 2-3 with a homer from his semi-new 3B digs.
- Juan Miranda went 0-3 from the revolving door that is the Diamondbacks first base spot.  Would not be shocked to see Brandon Allen there in about a month if this keeps up for the D-Backs.
- Darwin Barney just keeps doing his thing at 2B, going 2-4 in this game.  The kid just keeps on hitting and is up to a .333/.357/.452 batting line.
- W: Daniel Hudson (2-4), L: Casey Coleman (1-2), SV: J.J. Putz (6)
- HR: Ryan Roberts (6)
- SB: Chris Young (1), Gerardo Parra (3)

Mets 2 - Phillies 1

- Cliff Lee with 7 strong inning of 1-run ball, but runs were at a premium and he left with a no-decision.  He walked two batters in this game, which is quite uncharacteristic of him.
- The Chris Young comeback tour kept rolling on with 7 shutout innings, 3 walks, and 7 strikeouts.  You could also call it the when are you going back on the DL contest.  I give the guy 5 more starts before he's back on the DL.
- Ronny Paulino went 5-7 with a  RBI, that's about a week's worth of hits for most catchers.
- Jason Bay and Carlos Beltran each went 1-6 and continue to stay healthy, which is great for this offensively starved Mets team.
- W: Taylor Buchholz (1-0), L: Kyle Kendrick (1-2)
- SB: Jose Reyes (9,10), David Wright (6), Jason Pridie (1); CS: Jimmy Rollins (1), Ben Francisco (3)
