CFB Waiver Wire: Players to Pick Up Week 5

This article is part of our CFB Waiver Wire series.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC

James Summers, QB, ECU: Summers, a junior-college transfer, was expected to play receiver this season until training camp injuries called for him to move back to under center. In just one half, Summers torched Virginia Tech for 169 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and added one more through the air. Summers should be a top target this week, especially with a matchup against a reeling SMU defense on tap.

Hayden Moore, QB, Cincinnati:
Coming in for the injured Gunner Kiel (head) for the second consecutive week, Moore looked much more comfortable this time, setting a school record for passing yards. Moore will benefit from a pass-happy offense, even with a tougher opponent in Miami up next.

ACC

Rashawn Scott, WR, Miami: Scott has 18 receptions through three games and has twice topped 100 receiving yards. He had his best game of the season in his team's narrow win against Nebraska and while he only has one touchdown this season, Scott will face a Cincinnati defense that's ranked 98th in the nation in points allowed.

Patrick Skov, RB, Geogria Tech:
Skov didn't play well against Duke as the Yellow Jackets dropped their second consecutive game and Skov was held out of the end zone for the first time this year. But things should turn around for the junior as Georgia Tech will face a much easier run defense this week against North Carolina.

BIG 12

Sam Richardson, QB, Iowa State: Richardson hasn't exactly

BIG 12

Sam Richardson, QB, Iowa State: Richardson hasn't exactly lit up the stat sheet in the first three games of the season, but he's been consistent, averaging less than 250 yards per game. But this week Richardson gets to open Big 12 play against a Kansas team allowing 542.3 yards of total offense per game.

Wendell Smallwood, RB, WVU:
Smallwood thrashed Maryland last week, and while Oklahoma will present a steeper challenge, Smallwood is averaging 4.5 yards per carry against the Sooners in his career. The junior should play a big role in what could be a high-scoring game between powerful offenses.

BIG TEN

Taiwan Deal, RB, Wisc: With regular starter Corey Clement (sports hernia) sidelined for an extended period, Wisconsin will turn its running game over to the redshirt freshman Deal. He got his feet wet against lighter competition the last few weeks, but Deal should receive the bulk of the carries in a run-heavy offense, despite a tough matchup against Iowa next week.

Jake Rudock, QB, Michigan:
With De'Veon Smith nursing a tender ankle, Michigan could turn to Rudock and the passing game to get by Maryland. While Rudock has been unimpressive with a 2-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio through the first four games of the season, he gets a gift in a Maryland defense that is ranked 101st in the nation in passing yards allowed and passing efficiency.

CONFERENCE USA

Alex McGough, QB, FIU

McGough, who has thrown for eight touchdowns in his last three games, plays a Massachusetts team that allows 45 points per game this season. The Golden Panthers are scoring 75 percent of their touchdowns through the air this season.

Casey Martin, WR, Southern Miss:
Martin has recorded 100-yard receiving games and two touchdowns in back-to-back games and is the clear No. 1 target in a prolific passing offense. Next week he goes up against a North Texas defense that's yielding 43.7 points and 274 passing yards per game.

MAC

Trayion Durham, RB, Kent State: The fifth-year senior was leaned upon heavily last week against Marshall, finally recording more than 20 carries in a game this season. Durham responded by running for 114 yards and one touchdown. At 6-foot-1, 248, Durham is a force who could cause problems for a Miami (Ohio) defense that's having trouble stopping the run this season.

Damion Jones-Moore, RB, Toledo:
Jones-Moore has seen an extensive look with Kareem Hunt (hamstring) dealing with a suspension early in the first two games and then leaving the third game with an injury, and he's responded with a touchdown in each of his team's first three games. Jones-Moore isn't an ideal long-term fill-in, as Hunt likely will dominate carries when he returns, but if he is forced to miss another week, Jones-Moore could be in for a big day against a Ball State defense that's surrendering 196.5 yards per game on the ground.

MOUNTAIN WEST

James Butler, RB, Nevada:Don Jackson has received all the touchdown love in the Nevada rushing game, but Butler has posted more yards per attempt and actually has rushed for more yards on the season. Given the matchup this week against a struggling UNLV defense, both backs should see plenty of carries, and plenty of holes to run through.

Lamar Jordan, QB, New Mexico:
The dual-threat Jordan has only passed for two touchdowns this season, but he gets a gift this weekend in a matchup against in-state rival New Mexico State that's having issues stopping opponents ground and passing games this season.

PAC-12

Jordan Payton, WR, UCLA: Payton is leading the Bruins in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns, now scoring in three consecutive games. He faces an Arizona State defense this week that ranks 81st in the country in scoring.

Kevin Hogan, QB, Stanford:
Hogan has thrown multiple touchdown passes in his last three games and just one interception. In Week 5, he goes up against an Arizona defense that's allowing 261.5 passing yards per game.

SEC

Drew Morgan, WR, Arkansas: With injuries having hampered the Razorbacks' receivers, Morgan has stepped up as the primary target, catching a touchdown pass in three of his team's four games this season. He has a good matchup against Tennessee where Arkansas will try to end a three-game skid.

Patrick Towles, QB, Kentucky:
Fresh off shredding Missouri for two touchdowns and 249 yards while completing 81.5 percent of his passes, Towles gets a chance to pad his stats against FCS Eastern Kentucky.

SUN BELT

Shaedon Meadors, WR, Appalachian State: Meadors is a home-run threat at receiver who comes with some risk due to his reliance on the big play. But Meadors, who has receptions of 41 and 50 yards this year, gets the chance to go up against a Wyoming defense traveling across the country and allowing 35.3 points per game.

Ajalen Holley, WR, UL-Monroe:
Holley has caught 17 passes over his last two games and while he only managed 4.2 yards per reception against Alabama, the Crimson Tide will be one of the toughest defenses he's faced this season. Holley's next opponent, Georgia Southern, is a less stellar defense, allowing 387.8 yards per game.
