Tough matchup with Aztecs
December 9, 2016
Ward will play against San Diego State in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 17.
ANALYSIS
With two obviously competent defenses involved and a 54.5-point over/under, this game projects as a tough one for both offenses. Ward generally offers a high floor due to his rare running ability, however, and the Aztecs defense had given up a lot of big plays through the air in its last four games, surrendering 12 passing touchdowns in that span. The main danger of the Aztecs defense is its ability to create turnovers after intercepting 22 passes in 13 games this year. With 31 touchdowns in 11 games this year, Ward generally looks like a good bet to score at least twice, even if the yardage is scarce.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
Ward was spectacular in 2015, as the former wideout improbably turned himself into the best player on a Houston squad with surprise national championship ambitions. With coach Tom Herman arriving in Houston after previously coordinating the Ohio State offense, Ward was turned into Houston's version of Barrett, throwing for 2,827 yards and 17 touchdowns while running for 1,114 yards (5.7 YPC) and 21 touchdowns. Ward's lack of size (5-11, 185) makes him an injury risk, but if he stays healthy he should be in on the Heisman conversation.
Although he began the year as the backup, Ward became one of the nation's top dual-threat quarterbacks by season's end. In eight starts, he threw for 12 scores and rushed for 573 yards and six touchdowns. He enters this year as the clear starter with further optimism warranted by the hiring of Tom Herman, Ohio State's offensive coordinator the last three years. Ward is a perfect fit for Herman's offense, which created highly productive campaigns by Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett at Ohio State. Expect Ward to take a significant step forward this season.
