Training Camp Notes: August 8

This article is part of our Training Camp Notes series.

In a typical preseason, this weekend would feature the first full slate of preseason games, but due to this unique preseason, most teams are taking it easy this weekend before ramping up activities next week.

·        Before covering the limited news of the day, we should look at the fallout from the Washington Football Team releasing Derrius Guice yesterday. With Adrian Peterson having been somewhat successful with the team last year along with this year's non-traditional training camp, it seems most likely that he'll be in line for much of the early-down work to start the season, though he's a very limited upside fantasy option. However, it may benefit Antonio Gibson that coach Ron Rivera had the rookie sitting in on running back meetings along with doing some technical work at WR. At 6', 228 pounds to go with a blazing 4.39 40-yard-dash, it may be difficult to keep Gibson off the field at RB as the season progresses, making him a potential swing for the fences fantasy selection. In addition, it's possible that J.D. McKissic sees some work on passing downs while Peyton Barber and Bryce Love will most likely compete for depth roles, though Love could be worth a very late selection in drafts in case he emerges from the pack.

·        In today's news, Jarvis Landry was activated off the PUP list after recovering from offseason hip surgery. The fact that he was activated over a month before the season bodes well for him being ready to assume a full snap share in Week 1. He's expected to benefit from an offense that seems prepared to use a lot of TE-heavy formations, which should force defenses to keep extra defensive backs on the sideline while both Landry and Odell Beckham are expected see heavy target volume as the clear cut top receiving options. Look for Landry to continue functioning as a strong weekly fantasy option, making him a value as a player with an ADP of WR35 who goes outside the top-70 picks.

·        With a number of Detroit players already activated from the COVID-19 list, T.J. Hockenson was added to the list after clearing multiple physicals and tests. After a rookie season in which he dealt with ankle injuries and playing with backup QBs, his top-level athleticism makes him a potential breakout player who's currently being drafted outside the top-10 TEs. He'll also benefit from an offense that has a pair of outside WRs who can stretch the defense, which potentially should create ample space for Hockenson in the middle of the field.

·        Moving to the defensive side of the football, CB Quinton Dunbar of the Seahawks was removed from the commissioner's exempt list after prosecutors declined to file charges against him from May's alleged series of armed robberies. However, it's possible that the NFL could hand down a suspension, but should Dunbar be available, along with the addition of safety Jamal Adams, the Seattle defense could be in line to be an improved unit from 2019 that's worthy of being selected as a top-12 fantasy defense.
