NFL Reactions: Week 1

This article is part of our NFL Reactions series.

-Russell Wilson was almost flawless in Seattle's road victory over Atlanta, completing 31-of-35 passes for 322 yards and four touchdowns while leading the Seahawks with 29 yards rushing. Given the playcalling history of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, it was somewhat surprising to see the Seahawks take a throw-first, run-later approach on offense. DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett both saw eight targets, with Metcalf catching four for 95 yards and a touchdown while Lockett caught all of his eight for 92 yards. Chris Carson might have given some of his owners a scare when they saw that he ran for just 21 yards on six carries, but his six catches for 45 yards and two touchdowns on six targets were a crucial contribution in Seattle's explosive showing.

-All three of Atlanta's lead receivers were highly productive against Seattle, with each of them catching nine of 12 targets. Russell Gage went for 114 yards, Calvin Ridley went for 130 yards and touchdowns, and Julio Jones went for 157 yards. Hayden Hurst caught three of five targets for 38 yards, while Todd Gurley turned 14 carries into 56 yards and a touchdown.

-Josh Allen posted big fantasy production against the Jets, completing 33-of-46 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns, running 14 times for 57 yards and another touchdown. Running backs Devin Singletary and Zack Moss both saw only nine carries, and it might be difficult for the Bills to keep Allen's usage so high. Wideout Stefon Diggs was automatic, catching

Wideout Stefon Diggs was automatic, catching eight of nine targets for 86 yards while John Brown reeled in six of his 10 targets for 70 yards and a touchdown.

-Although the Jets only lost by 10, Sam Darnold and the Jets offense were hopeless against the Bills. Propelled mostly by a 69-yard Jamison Crowder touchdown, Darnold completed 21-of-35 attempts for 215 yards, one touchdown an one interception. Crowder was very good, finishing with seven catches for 115 yards and the touchdown on 13 targets. Le'Veon Bell left with a hamstring injury after catching both of his targets for 32 yards and taking six carries for 14 yards.

-The Lions had a decisive early lead over the Bears, but by the end Detroit blew it and allowed the Bears to come out ahead 27-23. Matthew Stafford (24-of-42 for 297 yards, one touchdown and one interception) had a game-winning strike on target to D'Andre Swift, but the rookie dropped it in the end zone. Given that Adrian Peterson had 14 carries for 93 yards while Swift had three carries and Kerryon Johnson only seven, the Lions apparently have a thing for drafting running backs in the second round and then planting them on the bench. Good thing second-round picks aren't valuable.

-Drew Brees didn't need to do much Sunday, throwing for just 160 yards and two touchdowns on 30 attempts, but the Saints defense came up big against the Buccaneers in their 34-23 victory. Tom Brady completed 23-of-36 passes for 239 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Ronald Jones led the Buccaneers backfield with 17 carries for 66 yards, catching two of his three targets for 16 yards, while recent pickup Leonard Fournette took five carries for five yards.

-The Vikings defense isn't what it used to be, but Aaron Rodgers looked great all the same Sunday, completing 32-of-44 passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns. Davante Adams was particularly effective among the Green Bay receivers, catching 14 of 17 targets for 156 yards and two scores, but Allen Lazard (four catches for 63 yards and one touchdown) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (four catches for 96 yards and one touchdown) both got in on the fun, too. Valdes-Scantling had a couple brutal drops and one of his catches was on an offsides free play, so he was a little rougher than his numbers look at a glance.

-Kirk Cousins did most of his damage in prolonged garbage time, but he did well enough for his fantasy owners by throwing for 259 yards and two touchdowns. Adam Thielen caught six of eight targets for 110 yards and two touchdowns, while Dalvin Cook scored twice on the ground.

-Cam Newton was superb in his first start for the Patriots, completing 15-of-19 passes for 155 yards while running for 75 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Newton probably can't keep carrying the ball that much, but at least he showed he's healthy.

-Carson Wentz got out to a quick lead but couldn't hold up under the Washington pass rush from that point, dealing with eight sacks and 14 quarterback hits. With the Washington defense doing the heavy lifting, they were able to get a win despite Dwayne Haskins throwing for just 178 yards and one touchdown while the team ran for just 80 yards. Antonio Gibson produced 36 yards on nine carries, but Peyton Barber took the touchdowns while plodding to 29 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

-Josh Jacobs had a huge day for the Raiders against Carolina, taking 25 carries for 93 yards and three touchdowns while catching four of six targets for 46 yards. Christian McCaffrey had his customary big game on the other side, taking 23 carries for 96 yards and two touchdowns while catching three of his four targets for 38 yards. Teddy Bridgewater completed 22-of-34 passes for 270 yards and one touchdown, an intermediate strike to Robby Anderson on a double-move that went for a 75-yard touchdown. Anderson finished with six catches for 115 yards on eight targets, while D.J. Moore only caught four of nine targets for 54 yards.

-Gardner Minshew made his strikes count against the Colts on Sunday, completing all but one of his 20 pass attempts while producing 173 yards and three touchdowns. It was a group effort from his lead receivers, with each of D.J. Chark (three catches for 25 yards and one touchdown on three targets), Laviska Shenault (three catches for 37 yards and one touchdown on four targets) and Keelan Cole (five catches for 47 yards and one otuchdown on five targets) all stepping up. Rookie runner James Robinson looked good enough.

-Marlon Mack left the Jacksonville game with what the team fears was a significant Achilles' tendon injury. Philip Rivers didn't throw much downfield, leaving wideouts T.Y. Hilton and Michael Pittman with a combined 11 targets while running backs Nyheim Hines (eight) and Jonathan Taylor (six) combined for 14 targets.

-The Kevin Stefanski offense looked a lot like the Freddie Kitchens offense against Baltimore, with Baker Mayfield looking rough in a 21-of-39 effort for 189 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Austin Hooper drew only two targets, and Odell Beckham caught only three of his 10 targets for 22 yards. The debut couldn't have been much worse for the new coach.

-Mark Ingram took 10 carries for 29 yards while J.K. Dobbins ran for 22 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Marquise Brown (five catches for 101 yards on six targets) and Mark Andrews (five catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns on six targets) were both automatic catching passes from Pocket Passer Lamar Jackson, who completed 20-of-25 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns.

-Tyrod Taylor struggled, but the Chargers running back duo of Austin Ekeler (19 carries for 84 yards) and Joshua Kelley (12 carries for 60 yards and one touchdown) were both good against the Bengals. Ekeler only saw one target, which resulted in a three-yard reception, but he should be much more active as a receiver going forward.

-Joe Burrow dealt with a nasty Chargers pass rush but almost led the Bengals to a win in his first start. A.J. Green had a game-winning touchdown that was overturned on a debatable interference call, leaving him to finish with five catches for 51 yards on nine targets. If Sunday's game is any indication, the offensive line will be an ongoing concern for Burrow and the Bengals.

-With top receivers Deebo Samuel (foot) and Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring) both out, Jimmy Garoppolo struggled against the Cardinals on Sunday, completing 19-of-33 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns. Raheem Mostert produced about 72 yards after the catch on one play alone, a 76-yard touchdown reception. Mostert finished with 56 yards on 15 carries in addition to four receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown on five targets. Tevin Coleman saw only four carries, while Jerick McKinnon took three carries for 25 yards and caught three of five targets for 20 yards and a touchdown.

-Kyler Murray struggled as a passer against the 49ers, completing 26-of-40 passes for 230 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but he ran for 91 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Murray was actually at the 100-yard mark before the final two plays, when he took two kneeldowns on shotgun snaps. DeAndre Hopkins was brilliant despite Murray's broader struggles as a passer, catching 14 of 16 targets for 151 yards. Kenyan Drake was busy on the ground otherwise, taking 16 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown while catching two passes for five yards.
