2018 Fantasy Outlook
By hooking on with the Texans during the offseason, Coates joined his third team in three seasons. He caught just six passes for 70 yards while with the Browns in 2017 and has a total of 28 catches over 32 NFL games, a career marred by injuries. Coates said he's healthy for the first time in two years entering training camp. There are a couple of schools of thought with respect to Coates. He's a field-stretching wideout, but that skill duplicates starter Will Fuller, suggesting a very minor role. The flipside of that is that the Texans had several injuries to targets last season and only one receiver, DeAndre Hopkins, caught more than 29 passes. There's potential for Coates to work his way into a regular gig as a third/fourth receiver and more if injuries strike again. Read Past Outlooks

Works out for Cowboys
Coates worked out for the Cowboys on Friday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Coates was cut by the Texans on Tuesday, and he's wasted no time in searching for a depth role elsewhere in the league. If Coates were to land in Dallas, he'd likely slot in behind Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, Cole Beasley, Allen Hurns and Tavon Austin (groin).

2015
Coates ultimately disappointed in 2016, when he was supposed to step in and replace the field-stretching Martavis Bryant. The two profile similarly, so the idea had merit and through Week 5 Coates certainly looked the part, averaging 84.2 yards per game on 22.2 yards per catch. However, the rest of his season was characterized by injuries and a horrendous case of the drops that caused him to tumble down the depth chart. He's behind Antonio Brown, Bryant and Eli Rogers for now, with Juju Smith-Schuster the odds-on favorite to secure the No. 4 job. After undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-July, Coates' cause has been hindered further. When healthy, he'll compete with Darrius Heyward-Bey, Justin Hunter and Cobi Hamilton, among others, for what will likely be one or two roster spots come final cuts.
