Malone was slow to develop at the University of Tennessee before breaking out in his junior season, and it appears that he'll be slow to develop in the pros as well. He was considered a deep-play specialist with the Vols and that might be his role with the Bengals, too. Unfortunately, his most noteworthy play all season was being the receiver that the Steelers' Ryan Shazier tackled on the play that Shazier got hurt. He'll begin training camp no better than fourth on the Bengals' depth chart behind A.J. Green, Brando LaFell and Tyler Boyd, and ultimately behind John Ross as well.
The 6-3, 208 pounder may be something of a one-dimensional deep-route specialist, but he's still a good prospect and a great value in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He's a former top recruit who earned rave reviews in Tennessee practices as a freshman, but generally struggled along with the rest of the team's passing game in his first two years. That changed in 2016, when Malone totaled 972 yards and 11 touchdowns on just 78 targets. With 4.4 speed, Malone rounds out a prospect profile that implies considerable upside. Unfortunately, he won't see a big role anytime soon with A.J. Green, John Ross and Tyler Boyd already in Cincinnati.
