2023 Fantasy Outlook
Lost amid a hectic offseason of target upgrades was the Browns adding Akins, who previously worked with QB Deshaun Watson when the two were with Houston. Ironically, his best year was 2022 when Akins had Davis Mills throwing him passes. Akins wasn't with the Texans 'organization in the preseason but rejoined his former team on its practice squad and finished with a team-high five TDs. While relinking with Watson is a good thing, the situation is different. There weren't many threats in a discombobulated offense last year, but Akins joins an outfit teeming with quality receivers and will back up David Njoku. Read Past Outlooks
Untargeted in playoff loss
Akins was not targeted while playing 16 of 71 offensive snaps in Saturday's 45-14 wild-card playoff loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Akins finished up a quiet first season with the Browns; he had fewer than two targets in 13 of 18 games. For the regular season, Akins caught 15 of 23 targets for 132 yards with zero touchdowns. He was signed to a two-year contract during the offseason, which made sense given his history with franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson (shoulder); however, he was never able to rekindle any of their prior on-field chemistry. Most of that was by design -- Cleveland had several other priority weapons on offense -- and part of that was the quarterback's gimpy shoulder. He's under contract for 2024 at a relatively affordable wage and could elevate to the primary backup to David Njoku, as Harrison Bryant will become an unrestricted free agent this coming offseason.

Optimistic about role in 2022
Akins believes the Giants' coaching staff will present him and New York's other tight ends with plenty of opportunities to make plays, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.
ANALYSIS
Akins points out that both head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka come from offenses that liked to get the tight end involved as a downfield threat rather than just a check down option. Daboll did so with Dawson Knox in Buffalo, while Kafka was an assistant on a Chiefs offense that heavily utilized tight end Travis Kelce.
