January 10, 2024
The Chiefs signed book to a reserve/future contract Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Book was drafted by New Orleans in the fourth round of the 2021 Draft and played one regular-season game with the Saints, completing 12 of 20 passes for 135 yards and two interceptions while adding six yards on three carries in a 2021 contest against Miami. The reserve/future contract doesn't give the quarterback eligibility for the upcoming postseason, but it will allow Book the opportunity to compete for a roster spot in training camp this summer.

After being selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Book started in just one game last season as the Saints' No. 3 quarterback behind Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian. Book struggled in his only start, completing just 12 of 20 passes for 135 yards and two interceptions. In his second year, the 24-year-old figures to remain as the team's third string quarterback with Jameis Winston starting and newly-acquired Andy Dalton serving as the primary backup. If both top options stay healthy, Book will likely not see playing time in the 2022 campaign.
Because Book wasn't certain to hear his name called on draft day, it was a surprise to see New Orleans gamble on the Notre Dame product in the fourth round this spring. However, if there's a coach to trust with developing a mobile quarterback, it's likely Sean Payton after he groomed Taysom Hill from an undrafted project to the possible successor of Drew Brees. Just like Hill, it may take Book a few years to acclimate his style of play to the pros, almost certainly leaving the QB competition in New Orleans to Hill and Jameis Winston. If both contenders stay healthy, Book won't see the field at all during his rookie campaign.
