Mitchell (calf) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Andrew Walker of the Colts' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell suffered the calf injury during last weekend's wild-card victory over the Texans and evidently isn't expected to recover in time for Saturday's divisional-round bout against the Chiefs. The 31-year-old will consequently finish the 2018 campaign with 30 total tackles, one pick and two forced fumbles over nine games (including playoffs). Mitchell will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the league year, but given the impact he's had in Indianapolis this season, it seems likely he'll have plenty of suitors on the open market.

Mitchell is averaging 76 tackles and seven pass deflections during his three seasons with the Steelers and has only missed one game in the last five years. The ironman-esque veteran is locked into the starting free safety role ahead of the season opener and there are no legitimate threats to his playing time.
Mitchell's IDP production the last two years has been thoroughly mediocre, as he has 151 tackles and three interceptions in that span despite playing a robust 2,006 snaps on defense. He has shown glimpses of playmaking ability, however, and he might be in better form this year after previously playing injured. He underwent surgeries on his shoulder and hand this offseason after playing through them in 2015, and it was just three years ago that he posted 3.5 sacks and four interceptions in the same season. He generally has a low floor, however.
After signing a five-year, $25 million contract with the Steelers in 2014, Mitchell turned in a respectable but disappointing season. Although he increased his total tackles from 66 to 71, he had no interceptions, and failed to record a sack for the first time since 2010. A revamped Pittsburgh defense could benefit from an experienced player like Mitchell, who still warrants some consideration in IDP formats.
Mitchell recorded a career-high 66 tackles in his first full season as a starter. He didn't play much with the Raiders in his previous four seasons, so the totals from last year are likely the biggest indication of what you can expect from his production in that department. Where he provides his biggest upside is his ability to force turnovers and get to the quarterback. Last season, Mitchell recorded 3.5 sacks, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles. His nose for the football should make him a solid IDP option again in 2014.
After recording 41 tackles (32 solo) last season in Oakland, Mitchell will compete for Carolina's starting strong safety position.
Mitchell will serve as a back-up defensive back for the Raiders in 2012.
Mitchell will see more playing time in his second season, but he is behind tackle-machine Tyvon Branch on the depth chart and will only see the field in passing situations.
Mitchell will begin the season as a reserve safety. The Raiders reached to take him in the draft; so should starter Michael Huff struggle, Mitchell could have the opportunity to make an impact in his rookie season.
