The veteran offensive tackle took a COVID-19 opt out for 2020, pushing his $16.5 million cap hit to 2021. The two sides are trying to work out a new arrangement that lowers the cap hit, with the Giants perhaps wary of losing another veteran blocker after they released guard Kevin Zeitler on Wednesday. The team might eventually consider releasing Solder if no agreement is reached.

Solder, a 2011 first-round draft pick, is in the last year of his contract with the Patriots. The 29-year-old is in line to continue is his role as the team's starting left tackle, an assignment that entails protecting Tom Brady's blind side.
