The Panthers released Searcy on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Searcy has 58 NFL starts to his name, including two last year for the Panthers before concussion symptoms brought his season to an early end. Rashaan Gaulden now becomes a clear favorite to start alongside Eric Reid at safety in Carolina, while the 30-year-old Searcy may need to compete for a roster spot elsewhere. Reid is the safest bet for IDP production in the Panthers secondary.

Searcy is no guarantee to start given Tennessee's glut of safeties and his reduced performance since latching on with the club prior to the 2015 campaign. Something in the ballpark of his 40-tackle, one-interception 2016 season is the likeliest outcome for the former Bill, whose willingness to take a pay cut over the next two years suggests even he knows he's unlikely to be a serious difference-maker in a crowded secondary.
After spending his first four seasons with the Bills, Searcy joined the Titans this offseason with an eye on their starting strong safety position. Over his last two years in Buffalo, Searcy registered 136 tackles, four sacks and four interceptions. If that sort of versatile production continues in Tennessee, Searcy could be a nice IDP consideration in fantasy leagues, although his volume will need to increase before he’s touted as a next-level fantasy difference-maker.
Searcy will likely pair with Aaron Williams at safety for the Bills this year in an effort to replace the production that left with Jairus Byrd's free agency departure.
The team did pick up two safeties in the draft, but those were in the later rounds and all indications have Searcy opening the season as a starting safety, across from the highly capable Jairus Byrd. In 2012, Searcy had 35 tackles, two forced fumbles, one pass defensed, and no interceptions filling in behind George Wilson, but those totals appear primed to receive a big boost in his third NFL season.
A fourth-round pick in 2011, Searcy had a pretty decent rookie season, starting three games and totaling 34 tackles and a pick. He'll make the team in 2012, the problem is there's no starting role for him unless George Wilson or Jairus Byrd were to get injured.
Rookie fourth-rounder from North Carolina. The Bills like his skill-set, but their starting spots are already well set, so he'll likely make the team as a backup and be asked to play a major role on special teams.
