ANALYSIS
Thornton came out of retirement in April after sitting out the 2018 season. It appears he did not make enough of an impression to make a serious bid at landing on the 49ers' roster. It is unclear if the 30-year-old will continue his efforts at a comeback after this news.

Signed away from the Eagles, Thornton will move from 3-4 defensive end to 4-3 defensive tackle in Dallas, a position that should suit him well given his size and physical style of play. He's never recorded more than one sack in a season and that isn't likely to change much with the Cowboys, but if he can command enough attention on the inside he could free up linemates like Tyrone Crawford to get to the quarterback more frequently. Thornton will have a bigger impact on the Dallas team defense than he will in IDP formats.
Thornton had a big 2014 campaign as part of the team’s starting defensive line. He was opportunistic, picking up three fumble recoveries and returning one for a touchdown. He will start on right side of the team’s defensive line for the third straight season.
Thornton was quietly one of the league's more effective interior defensive linemen last year, at least in terms of run defense. He'll figure prominently in Philadelphia's end rotation this year once again, likely as a starter.
Thornton should start opposite Fletcher Cox and next to Isaac Sopoaga at defensive end in Philadelphia's 3-4. He's unlikely to become an IDP factor, though.
Thornton will have a tough time earning a roster spot in a deep Philadelphia defensive tackle rotation.
