Heath racked up a career-high 85 tackles in 2018, and while the 28-year-old is by no means an elite athletic specimen on par with someone like Byron Jones, his willingness to throw his body around can make up for his lack of closing speed. The Cowboys have toyed with the idea of bringing in an upgrade for a couple of years now, but only after half-heartedly pursing Earl Thomas in free agency and not seriously addressing the position in the draft, Heath seems set to return as a starting safety once again.
Pushed into a starting role at safety last season following some offseason departures, Heath's 2017 campaign was something of a mixed bag. He set career highs with 71 tackles and three interceptions, but his limitations also became more apparent as his average speed and often poor angles left him a step slow to the play on too many occasions. The 27-year-old will need to hold off younger safeties like Kavon Frazier and Xavier Woods to hang onto his starting spot, but the Cowboys defense could be better off in the long run if Heath slips back into a depth role, where he can focus on making big hits on special teams and in nickel packages.
Heath will provide depth at safety, but should see most of his snaps on special teams in 2015
Pressed into regular duty last season, Heath started nine games and recorded 60 tackles and an INT. If he holds onto his starting job he could put up useful IDP numbers, but he's a better fit as a depth safety and special teams ace.
