2024 Fantasy Outlook
Thomas is coming off a surprisingly productive age-32 season with Washington, as he posted the second-highest single-season totals of his career across the board with 55 catches for 496 yards and four touchdowns on 78 targets. Nonetheless, Thomas was a cap casualty for the Commanders in March, as Washington released Thomas and reshaped its tight end room by signing Zach Ertz and drafting Ben Sinnott in the second round. Thomas remains a free agent, but he may wait until an injury elsewhere opens up an opportunity before signing. Despite his advanced age and lengthy injury history, Thomas showed last season that he’s still capable of delivering passable production in the right situation. Read Past Outlooks
Being cut by Commanders
Washington announced the release of Thomas on Friday, saving the team roughly $6.5 million in cap space.
ANALYSIS
Thomas' release leaves the Commanders with about $1.7 million in dead cap space. The veteran tight end is heading into his age-33 season but logged a solid bounce-back effort in 2023, having secured 55 of 79 targets for 496 yards and four scores across 16 regular-season games. A proven contributor capable of moving the chains on offense, Thomas should garner real interest on the free agent market, though he's not guaranteed a chance at a true starting role at this point in his career. Washington also released veteran tackle Charles Leno in a cap-saving move Friday.

Thomas made it back from a torn Achilles in 2021 for Week 1 of last season, but like many players before him he didn't have the same explosiveness and dealt with another lower-body injury early on. He ultimately played 14 games and took 68 percent of the offensive snaps in those contests, yet he finished with only a 39-323-1 line on 61 targets. While being another year removed from surgery might help, Thomas now is 32 and could lose his role (or at least part of it) to a young player like Cole Turner alongside John Bates. The Commanders didn't address their shaky TE room in the offseason, perhaps hoping Thomas can rebound.
