Joins Rocket Mortgage Classic field
June 28, 2020
Blaum will be in the field for the upcoming Rocket Mortgage Classic, Rob Bolton of PGATour.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Blaum has not teed it up on Tour since the Sanderson Farms Championship in mid-September, but he'll take Mackenzie Hughes' spot in the Rocket Mortgage field after the latter elected to withdraw following a T3 this weekend in Connecticut. Blaum missed the cut by two strokes at Detroit Golf Club in 2019.

Blaum got in only five events and didn't make a cut out of the 126-150 category. But he also played only two Korn Ferry events. He didn't have a known injury.
Blaum made the playoffs each of his first two years prior to last season. His lone top-10 in the 2018-19 season was a T4 at the RSM Classic. Iron play is where he will be looking to make the biggest improvement, as Blaum ranked 162nd in SG: Approach and 152nd in GIR percentage last season. The 35-year-old has never surpassed $1 million in a season, so his upside for the 2019-20 season is relatively low.
Blaum had a steady, but not spectacular rookie season in 2017 and he followed that up with a solid, but not spectacular sophomore season. Most impressive from his rookie season was the 22 cuts made in 29 starts. He wasn't as consistent last season, with just 14 made cuts in 26 starts, but he posted eight top-25s, which was two more than his rookie season. While consistency is nice, it's not necessary to be successful on the PGA Tour. If last season was the start of a trend and he's trading consistency for higher upside, then Blaum could be a solid salary cap selection this season.
Blaum showed an impressive amount of consistency during his first full season on the PGA Tour, making the cut in 22 of 29 starts. He wasn't able to get much done on the weekend, posting only two top-10s, but on the whole, it was a successful season. Though Blaum was at his most consistent during the fall portion of the season, he peaked during the summer, which is a good sign. Both of Blaum's top-10s came in July, which is promising for his prospects this season. Blaum's number makes him an interesting prospect for this season and if he can simply play a little better on the weekend, he'll improve significantly on his number this season.
Blaum got his PGA Tour card through the Web.com Tour Finals and used a T5 in Boise and a T18 in Columbus to do it. In Boise he finished with 64 and ranked T2 in birdies and 10th in putts per GIR. If he continues that combination on the PGA Tour, he might contend. Blaum was 33rd on the regular season money list, just missing his card that way. He also competed last fall at the OHL Classic on the PGA Tour and tied for 29th. A player hot now, the fall could be a good spot for him.
