One of the more colorful golfers around, Gore thus received a number of PGA Tour sponsor’s exemptions last year despite not having his card. He even had a top 10, albeit in the opposite-field Puerto Rico Open. So he should get a good number of starts in 2014-15. He’s one of the handful of PGA Tour winners among the 50, taking the long-forgotten 2005 84 Lumber Classic. But that was long ago, and he hasn’t even won on the Web.com Tour in four years. Despite the fact that everyone will be rooting for him, his best days are far behind. He could secure another top 10 or two, but don’t expect much more.
Gore got off to a horrible start in 2007, making the cut in only one out of his first seven events. From that point he was able to scratch out three top-10s and eight top-25s. The question you have to ask with Gore is, did he peak in 2005? Was he simply just on fire for a couple months back in 2005? He has not showed that form since becoming a member of the tour in 2006. I don't think he's as good as he showed during those couple months in 2005, but he's better than he's shown over the last couple years.
Gore was the darling of tour late in 2005, and with good cause. He had a tremendous run that started at the U.S. Open and carried over to a stint on the Nationwide Tour where he won three consecutive events. That led to an instant promotion to the PGA Tour where he won the 84 Lumber Classic upon arrival. After that run it was a given he would continue to do well in 2006 on the PGA Tour. The weight of expectations, however, can be too much for some people. After a slow start, Gore had to deal with an elbow injury and it was clear that 2006 was not going to be his year. With one full year on PGA Tour under his belt, Gore should be better equipped to handle all that comes with the Tour, and his results should improve.
