Hoffmann is developing a reputation as a grinder on the PGA Tour as he plays a lot, but he rarely has the high-end finishes. Last season was Hoffmann's fifth full season on the PGA Tour and every season he's ended up between $700k and $1.6 million. Hoffmann has just one top-3 finish in his career and only nine top-10s. That's an average of just less than 1.5 top-10s per season, which simply isn't good enough when looking for upside. Hoffman is still young and there is time to improve, but until he shows a little more, there's no reason to spend the nearly $1.3 million on him.
After consecutive years above the $1 million mark, the 2015-16 season was definitely a disappointment for Hoffman. More disappointing than his earnings was his lack of high-end finishes. Hoffmann earned only one top-3 all season and that came at the John Deere Classic. Hoffmann should bounce-back though; he's got plenty of talent and he's still young. What remains to be seen is his upside. To this point, it appears to be in the mid $1 million range, which isn't great, but just enough to take a chance on him in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues he should be drafted, but very late.
Timing is everything in this sport and Hoffmann's timing last season was perfect. Hoffmann essentially turned a top-20 at The PLAYERS into a spot at the TOUR Championship. He didn't exactly play well for much of the regular season, but he did just enough to sneak into the top-125 prior to the Fed Ex playoffs. From there he played his best golf of the season and continued to climb the rankings, ultimately ending up in the top-30. Hoffmann appears to be improving from week to week on the PGA Tour and considering his number is just over $1.5 million, he's worth a look in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues he should go near the 6th round.
Hoffmann had a strong rookie season that included seven top-25s and three top-10s. Hoffmann struggled early, but finished strong. That's the kind of recipe for future success. Hoffmann has some upside, but it's hard to tell just how much. He's worth some consideration in salary cap leagues and he should go in the range of 90-100 in draft leagues.
An Oklahoma State graduate like Rickie Fowler, Hoffmann didn’t get into the winner’s circle in 2012 on the Web.com Tour but did post a second, a third and five other top-10 finishes. He also qualified for U.S. Open at Olympic Club and finished an impressive T29. He was also first in scoring average on the Web.com Tour at 68.781. Watch out for Hoffmann in 2013, he has the potential to get a win in his rookie year.
