Falls outside top-125 in FedExCup standings
August 20, 2018
Van Aswegen missed the cut by one stroke at the Wyndham Championsip to fall from 127th to 125th in the FedExCup standings.
ANALYSIS
Van Aswegen missed seven cuts in his last nine starts of the season to ultimately miss the FedExCup Playoffs by two spots, finishing 127th in the standings. He'll attempt to retain his PGA Tour card through the Web.com Tour Finals, which begin this weeka at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship. The South African managed to hit 30 of 36 greens in regulation this past week at Sedgefield CC despite losing strokes on his approaches.

The 2017-18 season must've felt like deja vu for the workhorse Van Aswegen, who played more than 30 events and netted just one top-10 finish for a second straight season. The only difference was that this year's repeat wasn't good enough to retain his PGA Tour card in FedExCup points as he fell just two spots shy of the feat. The 36-year-old journeyman tends to struggle with his distance and accuracy off the tee but scrambled his way to six top-25 finishes and 20 made cuts in 2017-18. Expect more of the same with little room for much else from the man who has yet to relinquish his PGA Tour card since earning it back in 2014.
One top-10 and a bunch of made cuts – that was Van Aswegen's formula for making the top-125 last season. Van Aswegen's lone top-10 came in the fall at the CIMB Classic, which means he didn't accomplish much during the heart of the season. With that in mind, his prospects this season do not look very good. To his credit, Van Aswegen is a work horse, he plays about as much as anyone can on the PGA Tour – he just doesn't get much done during those starts. As such, he's not a good salary cap option this season.
Van Aswegen's jump from year-two to year-three was nothing short of amazing. Van Aswegen made only eight of 20 cuts in 2015 on his way to $168k in earnings. He had no top-10s and only one top-25. Those numbers make what he did last year all the more shocking. He made the cut in 23 of 30 starts last season and posted five top-25s, two top-10s and a top-3 finish on his way to just over $1 million in earnings. Van Aswegen's rookie season was more like his sophomore season than his third season, so as of now, his performance last year appears to be the outlier. As such, he's not a good salary cap option this year. In draft leagues, he'll go in the 10th-round or later.
The 32-year-old South African completed his first year on the PGA Tour in 144th place in the point standings, and regained his card via the Web.com Tour finals. Van Aswegen made 15-of-25 cuts with four top 25s. From 1011-13, he wasn’t exceptional on the Web.com Tour, either. Outside of the top 125 seems likely for him again.
