DraftKings NHL: Monday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings NHL series.

GOALIE

Mikko Koskinen, EDM at BUF ($7,800): It's basically pick your poison night, with the Leafs and Flames in a toss-up and the Oilers carrying a bit more momentum into the game thanks to Koskinen's back-to-back wins and a 30-save shutout against the Jackets. With just two games on the slate it's a difficult choice, but the Sabres have been awful since their winning streak.

CENTER

Sean Monahan, CGY vs. TOR ($6,000): At 1.08 points per game, Monahan isn't far behind John Tavares (1.09), but he comes $400 cheaper and the Flames are at home. You can't really go wrong with any of the top five centers, but Monahan seems like the best bang for your buck and carries a three-game point streak into the match.

William Nylander, TOR at CGY ($3,300): He's priced as a third-line center, which he currently is right now filling in for Nazem Kadri, but he's also way more talented than his peers. A contract holdout has rendered this a lost season for the young forward, who has just five goals in 37 games this season, but his offensive upside is still evident and continues to get power-play time. The Flames aren't as deep down the middle, which could open up opportunities for Nylander.

WING

Mitch Marner, TOR at CGY ($6,400): He's worth the premium despite the glut of elite wingers available for $6,000 and up, scoring seven points in his past three games. If the Flames' goaltending suddenly combusts again, Marner's a good bet to reap the benefits. He's their most creative playmaker and a lot of their power play runs through him. Leon Draisaitl ($6,300) is also worth considering.

Conor Sheary, BUF vs. EDM ($3,500): He's scored three goals and two assists in his past two games playing with Evan Rodrigues and Kyle Okposo, a second scoring line that's more effective than you'd expect. It's difficult to count on the Sabres but unlike last season their offense isn't the worst in the league anymore, and despite a small win streak the Oilers still aren't a very good team.

Nic Petan, TOR at CGY ($2,500): He scored a goal in his Leafs debut, making good on his one shot on goal and played less than eight minutes. He'll play on the fourth line again despite a solid first impression, and despite his small size does offer a lot of offensive upside. The former second-round pick was a brilliant scorer in the OHL and last season was a point-per-game player on a good AHL Manitoba squad. The playing time is a worry but everything else is trending up.

DEFENSE

Mark Giordano, CGY vs. TOR ($5,700): With 61 points on the season, Giordano is just the sixth NHL defenseman to score more than 60 at age 35 or older. The others: Nicklas Lidstrom, Al MacInnis, Ray Bourque, Larry Murphy and Sergei Zubov. Sources say that's pretty good company, so he should come at a huge premium over everyone else.

Brandon Montour, BUF vs. EDM ($4,000): Montour's getting more playing time now that Bob Murray isn't his head coach, and he's already making an impact on the Sabres offense. He's an excellent skater and shows good offensive instincts, but he's also stuck firmly behind Rasmus Ristolainen and Zach Bogosian on the depth chart. On the power play, Montour plays on the second unit, but the matchup favours the Sabres heavily against the Oilers' 29th-ranked penalty kill. There's value to be had at this price with his ability to contribute in both shots and blocked shots.
