Weise inked a one-year contract with Swedish club IK Oskarshamn on Monday, per agent Nick Riopel.
ANALYSIS
Weise didn't play anywhere during the 2020-21 season but will be headed to Europe for the first time in his professional career. At this point, Weise is likely done playing in the NHL, which would see him eventually retire having appeared in 513 games in which he tallied 55 goals and 70 assists.

Headed overseas?
RWMontreal Canadiens  Foreign
July 30, 2020
Weise has denied reports linking him to a move to HC Lausanne next season, telling reporters "There is no agreement. I'm here and I'm focused on the playoffs. I am 100 percent aiming for a return to the National League next year, I want to play well in the playoffs and I want to sign a new contract with the Canadiens," per Guillaume Lefrancois of La Presse.
ANALYSIS
Weise is slated to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The fact that he played in just 23 games for the Habs this year, in which he tallied just five points, likely won't have a lot of teams inquiring about his services. If the 31-year-old winger does move overseas, it would likely end his NHL playing career.

Weise's best seasons as a pro have been with Montreal, so there was some anticipation when the Canadiens brought him back at the trade deadline last year. Unfortunately, the veteran winger was clearly not the same player this time around, going scoreless while registering five shots on goal in nine games. Weise's poor play led to him sitting as a healthy scratch for the final 13 contests of the campaign. The 30-year-old is entering the final year of a four-year contract, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the Habs bury him in the AHL for the entirety of the upcoming season. In other words, Weise will have zero fantasy value in 2019-20.
In his second season of a four-year contract with the Flyers, Weise scored just four goals and eight points in 46 games. That was a pretty disappointing season, and it led to healthy scratches for most of the second half. With young players carving out major roles, and the Flyers signing James van Riemsdyk in free agency, Weise will probably once again be sitting in the press box more often than not. And even when he plays, it's not really clear where Weise would contribute to a fantasy lineup since he doesn't excel in any category.
Weise posted a shocking 14 goals and 26 points with Montreal two years ago, offering hope that he could rise out of the bottom-six role in which he's been typecast as a gritty, relatively low-talent winger, but that was the high point. Things haven't been nearly as rosy since, as he managed one point in a 15-game stint with the Blackhawks following a midseason trade in 2015-16, then came to Philadelphia last season and put up a mere 15 points in 64 games. With a light role surely on tap again this year and the 29-year-old coming off elbow surgery, there’s essentially no fantasy appeal here.
Weise is a fourth-liner who made a big impact on the Canadiens after he was acquired from Vancouver. He scored three goals in 16 games with Montreal after needing 44 games with Vancouver to score the same amount. He then added three goals and seven points in 17 playoff games, including two game-winners. He's a high-character guy who can give the Canadiens a little touch on the fourth line and at 25, still has much in the tank.
Weise spent another season as a fourth-line grinder for the Canucks, appearing in 42 games in 2012-13 while seeing 9:33 minutes of ice time per night. He was re-signed this offseason to assume the same role this year.
Weise appeared in 68 games for the Canucks last season, finishing with eight points (4 G, 4 A) while averaging just over eight minutes of ice time per-game. The 24-year-old winger was re-signed this offseason and will return to Vancouver to play a similar fourth-line role with the team.
Weise spent 73 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) last season. He has proven to be adept at scoring goals as well as dishing assists at the minor-league level. Last season his penalty minutes soared to 114 - from 64 the season before. With a little more seasoning in the minors, he could be ready for a part-time role with the parent club sooner than later.
