November 19, 2019
Kempe has been placed on unconditional waivers by the Kings, which will allow him to head to the KHL, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Not to be confused with Adrian Kempe of the Kings, Mario has appeared in just 70 NHL games since being selected by the Flyers back in the 2007 draft. He has 13 points in those 70 NHL appearances, and there's a good chance Kempe never adds another.

Kempe had four goals and five assists in 52 games for the Coyotes last season. He also produced 105 hits as a bottom-six forward. He entered free agency at the end of the campaign and earned a one-year, two-way contract with the Kings, who employ his younger brother, Adrian. The elder Kempe is less decorated at the NHL level, with 13 points and 125 hits in 70 career games. The Swedish forward will most likely generate something in the neighborhood of 10-15 points and could see significant time with AHL Ontario if his quality of play slips.
Kempe is unique because he didn't reach the NHL until he was 28 years old. Perhaps the Swede could have arrived sooner as Philadelphia's 2007 fifth-round (122nd overall) draft pick, but he opted to play overseas for nearly a decade, jumping around between various Swedish circuits as well as Russia's Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Kempe posted two goals and two assists over his first 18 NHL games and maintained a 0.78 points-per-game pace with AHL Tucson in 2017-18. Arizona is committed to him for at least one more year at $700,000, and while he'll likely start in the minors, Kempe remains a valuable depth option for the young Coyotes.
