Signs largest KBO deal
PHanwha Eagles
February 22, 2024
Ryu signed an eight-year, $12.4 million contract with the Eagles on Wednesday, Jee-ho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency reports.
ANALYSIS
The contract includes an out clause at an unspecified date, but there's a strong likelihood that the 36-year-old finishes his career in the KBO after signing the largest deal in league history. Ryu began his professional career with Hanwha in 2006 before leaving for Major League Baseball following the 2012 campaign. He proceeded to spend the next 11 seasons in MLB between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays, accruing a 3.27 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 1,055.1 innings. The southpaw showed a downturn in strikeouts during his final season with Toronto in 2023, though his ability to induce weak contact should allow him to age well as he makes the move back to Korea for 2024.
