Gonzalez will fight Ike Villanueva in a light heavyweight bout at UFC Vegas 7 on August 22, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
ANALYSIS
The bout was initially scheduled to take place Aug. 15 at UFC 252, but the matchup was pushed back a week for undisclosed reasons. Gonzalez was previously set to make his UFC debut on Fight Island in July, but his opponent, Kenneth Bergh, had to withdraw during weigh-ins. Villanueva made his UFC debut in May and was beat handily by Chase Sherman.
Taking on Villanueva in August
Light HeavyweightUFC
July 29, 2020
Gonzalez will fight Ike Villanueva in a light heavyweight matchup at the UFC event on August 15, Nolan King of MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez was supposed to fight in July against Kenneth Bergh, but that was scrapped after Bergh had to withdraw. Gonzalez will make his UFC debut, while Villanueva will be making his second start with the promotion. Through smaller and regional circuits, the Mexican-born Gonzalez owns a record of 16-5-0, with all 16 of those wins coming by way of stoppage (12 KO/TKO, 4 submission).
Opponent withdraws during weigh-ins
Light HeavyweightUFC
July 14, 2020
Gonzalez will no longer face Kenneth Bergh at UFC Fight Island on Wednesday after Bergh was forced to withdraw due to weight-cutting issues, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez was able to make 205 pounds without issue, but he won't get to fight in his scheduled debut without an opponent. Given he showed up and made the weight, it wouldn't be surprising to see the UFC give him another shot down the road. For now, it appears he can safely be removed from any fantasy lineups.
To debut on Fight Island
Light HeavyweightUFC
July 13, 2020
Gonzalez will take on Kenneth Bergh in a light heavyweight matchup at a UFC Fight Night event July 15, Alexander K. Lee of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez is a relative unknown set to make his UFC debut against another debuting opponent. He sports a 16-5-0 record as a professional, and not a single one of those fights has needed the judges. He'll take on a technically-undefeated opponent in Bergh who has previously appeared on Dana White's Contender Series. Gonzalez sits as approximately a (+125) betting underdog for the matchup as of Monday morning.
