Cuts ties with the UFC

December 4, 2019
Maynard is no longer under contract with the UFC as of Wednesday and is now trying to figure out which promotion he will land with next, Farah Hannoun of mmajunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Maynard first thinks that he's going to make the move down from lightweight to featherweight and he also thinks he's going to hire himself a manager who can help deal with booking fights instead of Maynard always doing it for himself. It's been over a year since he last fought when he suffered a second-round TKO defeat to Nick Lentz at UFC 229. He's finally able to move on from the UFC and is in search of the next step in the process that will be best for his fighting career moving forward.

Not competitive in return to lightweight division
FeatherweightOther
October 6, 2018
Maynard lost to Nik Lentz via TKO (strikes) at 1:19 of Round 2 at UFC 229 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Moving back up to lightweight for the first time in several years couldn't save Maynard. He found himself on his heels shortly after the opening bell rang and he was never able to recover. Sporting a a 2-6 record in his last eight fights dating back to May 2013, Maynard has been a liability for years. The UFC has zero incentive to give him another shot with the company.
Will face Nik Lentz
FeatherweightOther
August 20, 2018
Maynard will move up to lightweight to face Nik Lentz at UFC 229on Oct. 6 in Las Vegas, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Perhaps most notable for Maynard heading into this bout is that his last three outings were at the featherweight division, where he went 2-1 with a win over Teruto Ishihara by unanimous decision coming most recently at The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale. He'll now move up a weight class to face Lentz, but still hold slight height and reach advantages in the matchup. Following the late-August announcement, Maynard opened as approximately a (+165) betting underdog.
Easily takes decision Friday in Vegas
FeatherweightOther
July 7, 2017
Maynard defeated Teruto Ishihara via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26) at The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale on Friday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Facing Ishihara was a best-case scenario for the 38-year-old Maynard. Gray landed all 11 of the takedowns he attempted including five in each of the first two rounds. He kept Ishihara firmly planted to the mat throughout the course of the 15-minute bout. The dominant effort says more about Ishihara's pathetic grappling skills as opposed to anything Maynard did. Gray is still just 3-6 in his last nine fights overall.
To face Teruto Ishihara in TUF Finale
FeatherweightOther
April 25, 2017
Maynard will face Teruto Ishihara in a featherweight matchup at The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption Finale on July 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Maynard suffered losses in five of his last six fights dating back to 2013. While he absorbs 2.53 significant strikes per minute, he maintains a 69 percent significant strike defense and an 83 percent takedown defense. Age may be a determining factor since Maynard is 12 years Ishihara's senior, but his commendable defense could hold off the 25-year-old Team Alpha Male product's attacks.
Falls to 1-5 in last six fights, has one win since June 2012

Maynard lost to Ryan Hall via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 28-29) at The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Maynard is washed up and needs to retire, but in his defense, it's pretty much impossible to have an effective, entertaining fight against Hall. Baffled by Hall's awkward (and boring) style of fighting, Gray was credited with a COMBINED eight total strikes landed over the first two rounds. Heck, he only attempted 29. Maynard didn't sustain much damage in this fight, which is probably going to lead to him fighting again, although that really isn't anything anyone needs to see anymore. Gray is 1-5 in his last six fights and he has exactly one win since June 2012.
