Losing streak hits three
Formiga lost to Alex Perez via TKO (leg kicks) at 4:06 of Round 1 at UFC 250 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Formiga's training camp clearly didn't include practice on how to defend the leg kick. A fighter with extremely limited power, Formiga is going to struggle whenever a bout is contested entirely on the feet, and that's where this one took place. The Brazilian doesn't have a single knockout victory in his career despite having more than 30 professional fights under his belt. Formiga was riding high following a unanimous decision victory over Deiveson Figueiredo in March 2019, but he has lost three-straight fights (Joseph Benavidez, Brandon Moreno, Perez) since.

This is one of very few fights the promotion currently has booked for the event in line to be called UFC 250. Formiga was upset by Brandon Moreno in his last walk to the Octagon, which happened to occur in the UFC's most recent live event in Brazil on March 14. Perez, on the other hand, has won back-to-back fights and is 5-1 with the company, with his only loss being to one of the top flyweights in Joseph Benavidez. Formiga has recorded at least one takedown in each of his last six fights, though offensive wrestling volume leans with Perez -- albeit over a shorter sample size. Perez has the edge in striking volume, but Formiga owns superior striking defense marks.

He did next to nothing on the feet -- as usual -- but the Brazilian was effective enough in mat situations for this fight to be closer than what the judge's scorecards dictated. Formiga has now lost back-to-back fights on the heels of a four-fight winning streak. His biggest flaw is the lack of power in his hands. Formiga has had plenty of success over the course of his long career but somehow still doesn't have a knockout win on his resume.

The loss marked his second to Benavidez in his career and could cost Formiga a shot at the title. He'll look to bounce back against Moreno, who's coming off a win over Kai Kara-France at UFC 245 in the middle of December. While Moreno is known as a submission specialist, he showed vast improvements in his striking against Kara-France. However, Formiga has rarely been able to generate much significant striking, but his grappling is where he is able to succeed, as he has recorded takedowns in two of his past two fights. Moreno carries slight advantages in height and reach.
