Moreno's new opponent, Brandon Royval, last fought Dec. 16, falling to Alexandre Pantoja via unanimous decision. Royval struggles when it comes to takedown defense, so Moreno will look to get him to the canvas when the two men square off in six weeks.

Drops UFC Flyweight Championship
Moreno lost the UFC Flyweight Championship on Saturday, falling to Alexandre Pantoja via split decision (49-46, 47-48, 47-48) at UFC 290 in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It was a brilliant fight that had everything, but two of the three judges got this correct. The 49-46 scorecard in favor of Moreno is particularly awful. In a 25-minute, back-and-forth war, the only clear frame the now-former champion won was the second. Moreno had the edge in terms of cardio, but he allowed Pantoja to land 6-of-11 takedown attempts for 8:26 worth of control time. He spent north of two minutes in each of the final three rounds being controlled on the mat -- an exceptionally bad visual in an exceedingly close bout. Brandon did do an brilliant job of reversing position on the mat on a regular basis, but he simply got outworked a good portion of the final 20 minutes. All that said, the gap between these two is non-existent, and the UFC could very easily book a rematch here despite the fact Pantoja has now one each of the first three fights between the two. Both men will also walk away from this matchup with a $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus.

Title defense scheduled

Moreno became the new undisputed UFC Flyweight Champion on Saturday, defeating Deiveson Figueiredo via TKO (doctor stoppage) at 5:00 of Round 3 at UFC 283 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
ANALYSIS
Of the four fights between the two, this was the most clear cut. Moreno seemed to be a step ahead the entire way, led by three successful takedowns on six attempts. He dodged a deep guillotine attempt from Figueiredo early in Round 2 before landing what ended up being the fight-ending punch early in Round 3. It cracked Deiveson in his right eye, leaving it completely swollen shut by the time the frame was over. Stopping the fight was the correct call. Moreno has lost once since May 2018 and that was in his prior bout against Figueiredo. It seems likely Alexandre Pantoja will be next in line for Moreno's title. For what it's worth, the two fought in May 2018, with Pantoja winning via unanimous decision. Brandon is a much better fighter now than he was back then.
