2024 Fantasy Outlook
You wouldn't know it from his 2023 rushing average, but Etienne is one of the most explosive running backs of distant NFL memory. This was made clear by Etienne's 2022 rookie season (5.1 yards per carry over 220 carries) and four-year Clemson career (7.2 yards per carry and 70 touchdowns over 686 carries). The Jaguars offense fell apart in 2023, however, and defenses knew how to smother the Jaguars run game with minimal effort, implausibly limiting Etienne to just 3.8 yards per carry. The Jaguars coaches and front office committed to the theory that this dropoff was the fault of the offensive line rather than the coaches, so Jacksonville made it a goal to improve its offensive line going into the 2024 season. Even as far as this theory goes the Jaguars haven't done much, however – the signing of free agent center Mitch Morse doesn't move the needle and the other four starting positions appear set with Cam Robinson (left tackle), Ezra Cleveland (left guard), Brandon Scherff (right guard) and Anton Harrison (right tackle). Although Etienne is one of the best running backs in the league he also might be playing on a higher difficulty level than nearly all other running backs. Even if the Jaguars offense remains bad in 2024 the workload for Etienne should remain assured, at least -- the selection of 2023 third-round pick Tank Bigsby turned out to be a major false alarm. Fifth-year option picked up
The Jaguars officially exercised Etienne's fifth-year option Monday.
ANALYSIS
GM Trent Baalke said Saturday that Jacksonville would pick up the fifth-year options of both Etienne and quarterback Trevor Lawrence, and the team has now made both moves official. Since missing his entire rookie season due to a Lisfranc injury, Etienne has compiled back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing campaigns and totaled 17 touchdowns over the last two seasons. Now signed through the 2025 season, Etienne is locked in atop Jacksonville's backfield for the next two years, with Tank Bigsby and D'Ernest Johnson available to back him up.

ANALYSIS
In an interview earlier this month, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said the team would look to give more work to depth running backs Tank Bigsby and D'Ernest Johnson in 2024. "I think it's a little bit of everything," Pederson said of the factors that contributed to Etienne's increased volume last year. "He was getting it done. D'Ernest got hurt a little bit in there, and then Tank was a rookie and learning and coming on. We really like Tank, and he'll have a bigger impact for us this year for us. It's not the recipe, necessarily, to put Travis in that situation. So I would consider knocking a few of those reps down to keep him healthy throughout the course of the year." Pederson made similar comments when Bigsby was drafted, and Etienne went on to finish third in the NFL with 325 touches. That increased volume came with decreased efficiency, however, as his yards per carry dropped from 5.1 to 3.8.

2021
Although it was an up-and-down season for Etienne, his delayed NFL debut was generally promising, and his big-play ability in particular difficult to ignore. All Etienne did at Clemson was make big plays, producing explosively in a way that only a few running backs in college football history ever have, so it was always expected he'd be a big-play threat in the NFL. Etienne confirmed in 2022 that he's among the most dangerous long-range threats at running back in the league. The catch is that the rest of his game was arguably lacking -- Etienne struggled with fumbles (five) and had occasional issues with focus drops, including a wide-open, would-be touchdown in Week 1, and he didn't always churn out consistent yardage in between the big plays. As much as it's great to see Etienne peel off 20- and 40-yard carries at a league-leading pace, it would go a long way for his production and the Jaguars offense if he could avoid going cold in between the big plays. Despite whatever other particulars, it's arguable that the main story of Etienne's 2022 season is that he appeared fully recovered from the Lisfranc fracture that ended his rookie year in training camp. Few injuries are more disturbing for a running back, yet Etienne thankfully appears to be well past it.
